The purpose of this paper is to use an appropriate theory for a client. The theory will help the client with their current situation as well as using strategies to overcome the problem. The theory will also help provide a better understanding of how to best support the client. The theory will determine if the treatment will be designed for a short or long term.
The goal counseling to help Ana to decrease her depression and anxiety related to; lack of social support, raising a child alone, being away from her family of origin, being unemployed, and dropping out of college. According to Brakemeier and Frase states in their study “interpersonal psychotherapy as an effective short-term treatment strategy in major depression. In IPT, a reciprocal relationship between interpersonal problems and depressive symptoms is regarded as important in the onset and as a maintaining factor of depressive disorders.” The theory is used into three phases. According to Murdock (2013), the first phases will be the intake and the diagnosis procedure. There are two different assessments that need to be done. One is the formal assessment that the counselor conducts. The second assessment consists of a complete medical evaluation. The second phases are when the counselor will focus on the chief complaint or reason for referral, where client discuss more in detail the problem of the client that was discussed during intake. It is a time-limited, non-transference / cognitive-based therapy that focuses on communication and social support and can be easily conducted in a perinatal clinic setting.” Therefore, interpersonal psychotherapy helps the individual feel less depressed and resolves their problems. The theory addresses problems on the social level by helping the client with their interpersonal behaviors so they can develop a better relationship and interact with others. This will help Ana by calling her parents more often or visiting her parent in Guatemala. Interpersonal psychotherapy helps in the social perspective by adjustment and interpersonal functioning.
