Weegee was not known by that name until later on in his life through series of jobs. His birth name was Usher Fellig, and he was the second of seven children. He was born on 1899 in the former Austrian province of Galicia, which is now a part of Ukraine. His family was poor, so that made his work ethic better since he understood you need money to live. His work ethic was proven to be strong throughout his life until his death in 1968.

Fellig’s name was Americanized to Arthur when he moved to New York from Ukraine. Before dropping out of school at fifteen, Fellig fell in love with English, at that time, moreover Fellig’s parents was adding three children to an already seven children coupled with being poor drove Fellig out of the family. Since he left the family, this resulted in him getting a number of part-time jobs such as bus boy, selling candy to factory workers, working in restaurants, with forcing him to work in just about anything that a fifteen year old could do. He enjoyed keeping up with events by reading books, magazines. To search for jobs, he would regularly read the daily newspaper's job section. He got so fast with the squeegee that he could clear excess water from thousands of prints a day. The other printers took note of that and he was known as squeegee boy, and called out by that name whenever a cleaning needed to be done. Supposedly, later, that moniker got changed to Weegee.
