Edgar Allen Poe uses suspense as a major weapon to create fear and dread in The Tell- Tale Heart. One was he use suspense is through Foreshadowing. In the second paragraph in the story the narrator declares “I made up my mind to take the life of the old man” (Poe, 303). The statement creates suspense straight away in the story. The reader will know the old man will die; It is just a matter of how and when. This keeps the reader guessing and on the edge of their seat through the rest of the story. The deathwatch beetles also foreshadow the old man’s death. While the two were in a Mexican standoff like situation waiting for each other to make a sound the deathwatch beetles were sounding. It is said that when a deathwatch beetle is heard death is near. So …show more content…
The narrator’s voice made it seem like he was pleading his case or telling his story in court. He constantly was pleading his sanity and saying he is not crazy and explaining his case. At the end of the story he admitted his guilt to the officials so the way he was pleading his case may have foreshadowed that he was going to get caught. Another way Edgar Allen Poe added suspense to the story was the constant fluctuating intensity. Straight away he declared that he was going to kill the old man. The intensity started off strong then he slowed it down going into detail. Throughout the story the intensity got faster and faster as the seven nights passed. This created anxiety within the reader. On the eighth night the narrator slowed it down because the reader knew that was when the old man was going to die. Poe wanted to build the intensity up from nothing. As the narrator stalked the old man his heart beated faster and faster as the moment got faster and faster than he was killed. Poe slowed the story down once again. The narrator was very calm until the guilt ate at him as he tried to cover up the death of the old

Poe uses vivid imagery to make the story more suspenseful. The quote, “It was open --wide, wide open --and I grew furious as I gazed upon it. I saw it with perfect distinctness --all a dull blue, with a hideous veil over it that chilled the very marrow in my bones; but I could see nothing else of the old man's face or person: for I had directed the ray as if by instinct, precisely upon the damned spot.” shows the imagery in here is suspenseful. It uses imagery by using adjectives and repetition. Words like "hideous" and "chilled" creates a vivid picture in the reader's mind.…

Reading provides us more suspense than a performance does. For example, in the Tell-tale Heart the main character waits at the door for an hour. This builds suspense by making us thinking about what will happen next. In a performance you can’t build that much suspense because you can’t have a character wait by the door for an hour. I don’t about you, but that would not be a play that I would want to watch.…

By repeating certain adverbs and adding other adjectives adds to the drama and makes it more intense and suspenseful, his paranoia adds to the stress and anxiety that the narrator is feeling; for example poe could've easily written “Very cautiously” instead of “cautiously-oh, so cautiously —cautiously” to get his point across, But by repeating certain words over and over again the author creates a situation that is much more stressful, horrid and cruel. These repetitions bring the reader and the narrator much closer together because the reader intensely feels what the narrator is going through and how he is trying to justify his actions by repeating adjectives such as “wide” in “It was open --wide, wide open.” if it wasn't for this, the reader wouldn't be convinced of what the narrator is trying to justify and make sense of. Moreover, by repeating certain words the reader can’t help but to sympathize with the killer and question his (in)sanity. it creates an anxiety and paranoia which requires a hasty action and Poe took this concept and implement it very well in the story to a point it becomes the primary force at engaging the reader with how the narrator is feeling during the course of the…

In this story, Poe shows the mental state of the character by having him explain all the actions he takes in great detail, but not anything else like his name or where he is now. When he was in the room with the old man he quoted, “ All in vain; because Death, in approaching him, had stalked with his black shadow before him, and enveloped the victim”(38). I think the author is trying to show us how the character thinks that death is already upon the old man and that he will die anyways. After he kills the man he tells the reader, “If you still think me mad, you will think so no longer when I describe the wise precautions I took for the concealment of the body”(39). Hear the author shows the mental state of the character by making the reader want to question his state of sanity and for the character to describe in detail what he did with the old man’s body after he killed him.…
