Animal Farm, a short fable written by George Orwell, is an allegory of the Russian Revolution, and could symbolize any kind of revolt in general. He did an amazing job setting up the characters and I loved how each of the animals had their own representation of a group of people in real life. Systems of government were also represented in animal farm, as well as in the game of musical chairs that we played beforehand.
The story begins with a drunken and negligent owner, Jones, and a beautiful speech of freedom and equality by old Major. The animals, who are sick of their owner, revolt and take over the farm. Orwell expertly uses satire to portray different groups of people and specific leaders during the Russian revolution as animals. Jones represents Czar Nicholas who, though not exactly cruel, has become rather unpopular for his seemingly disregard for his people. Napoleon represents Joseph Stalin as a cruel, selfish, dictator. Good old Boxer represents the middle/working class, the majority of the people who want to do what’s best, and have a misplaced sense of loyalty due to propaganda and false information, like how Squealer makes everything seem good in animal farm. The way Squealer deliberately lies shows us exactly how propaganda is used to control a population.Though this allegory definitely represents the Russian Revolution it also could represent any revolt or revolution in general. Is it fair for the ‘winner’ to get everything, the one who works the hardest, maybe even cheating a little? Or is is fair for everyone to get the same thing, even if some sit out or don’t try as hard, and there be no chance for anyone to get the ‘big chocolate bar’? I suppose there are many different ways that you could look at this, and really, no matter what you do, not everyone is going to be happy. You could argue that the one who got more deserved it for working harder… but others worked hard also and got nothing. Besides, everyone likes to get a little bit of something…. However you could argue that it is more unfair for the winner to get the same as everyone else. In real life, while playing a game with kids, like when I’m babysitting, we have this problem all the time, and I tend to be more ‘communist’ or ‘socialist’ in the way that I give everyone the same thing…. To make it ‘fair’. And I believe that it is fair… plus it’s my candy do do as I like with, right? But in the real world when people have to work to make a living, and not everything belongs to the government.Having a communist form of government takes the power from the people, and makes the government even more powerful.
