Reflective Essay: Rhetorical Analysis Of An Article

This semester in English 101 has been a major eye opener for me. When I signed up for the class I didn’t anticipate the mass amount of material that we would cover. In addition to that I didn’t think about all the skills that I would learn over the course of this semester, which gave me a solid foundation and skill set for the remainder of my college career, and eventually into the real world. The first thing that this class taught me was how to use rhetorical devices to make my paper much stronger than it was before. When using these devices, you are able to appeal to your audience so that they can feel a better connection, and in turn agree with what you are trying to convey. For example, you would want to address someone who you are trying to make a business deal with differently than someone that you want to make jokes or poke fun at. I also learned when to use appropriate tone and formality in my writing depending on who my audience is which expanded my use of communication within my writing. You can see this in my paper when we wrote our Rhetorical Analysis of an Article. In my first submission I had a split voice, and in my final draft I have a complete voice and tone that stayed appropriate to the audience that I was speaking to. …show more content…
I hope that by reading through these essays you too can expand your knowledge and skill set of proper writing.

Overall this course was very beneficial to me. I learned more than I could have predicted. I learned how to be a fundamental writer for the rest of my college experience by fixing small flaws that I had within my writing. The resources presented in class are resources that I will use the rest of my academic career and I am very appreciative of

Rhetorical Analysis Project: The Future Generation is Over Controlled Civil liberties, or personal freedoms are personal freedoms of thought, behavior, or expression that any authorities cannot abridge by law or by judicial interpret ion without due process. As one of the universal applications, personal freedom-a human right-should not be interpreted culturally or contextually(Franck, 593). For example, China’s Fundamental Rights and Duties of Citizens claims to protect many civil liberties. The U.S. constitution, especially the Fourteenth Amendment, protects civil rights by introducing a series of clauses. Hence, ideally, citizens should enjoy freedom from forced disappearance, freedom from torture, and also the right to security, privacy…

There were also multiple revisions needed for my rhetorical analysis. Similar to my playlist profile, I had issues with grammar and proper MLA format, so I focused in on those micro revisions. However, I dealt with some more major problems within my paper as well. You commented that in my introduction I did not have a forecasting statement, so that was added to the paper. For the section that was titled tone, style, and emotional appeal, you made the comment that I did not discuss the actual emotional appeal or tone enough, and merely explained the purpose of the article.…

In the magazine article, the author uses specific diction, imagery and personification to convey a shifting mood from a celebratory reunion with his constantly changing hometown to a reflective and disappointed remembrance, but eventual acceptance of his hometown while he was growing up. In the first part of the passage, the author creates a mainly joyful tone while writing about the place that he used to live as a child. The author writes about the lawns that “curves around” his grandfather’s house and talks about his body “steaming in the cold air.” These two examples of diction and imagery provide an insight into the feelings of comfort and security the author feels coming to his home again.…

I remember the first time I wrote an essay that was being graded at the college level. This was in my junior year when I took AP Language and Composition, our first essay was a rhetorical analysis essay from a very old excerpt that used old english and was very hard to read. When I first started reading the passage I started to get nervous because I didn't understand what the text was saying but then I started to annotate and the passage began to make sense. I found many rhetorical strategies that the author used and I then began to outline the essay in my head.…

Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

A lot can happen in just ten short weeks. I feel like I have grown from an amateur writer to a more advanced writer. But do not get me wrong, I know there is still much more room for improvement. The first half of the quarter was focused on the Rhetorical Analysis Essay and the second half was more geared towards the Rhetoric in Practice Project and Essay. At the time, I was just completing these assignments because they were mandatory, but looking back at the quarter I have noticed great improvements and growth not only as a student, but also as a writer.…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…

English composition was never my strong nor favorite because of my knowledge of the grammar and organization in my writing. Taking English 101 is a jump start for me, because last year of high school my teacher focused primarily on English literature. The course has introduced me to rhetorical analysis, and swatching (imitating author argument). Throughout the semester and all of the papers written I can say that it was a good experience to write at a college level and the expectation from college professors is good for future courses that involve writing essays.…
