Alice Walker uses metaphor. In the sentence “And the summer was over”, Summer is a symbol of the innocence of Myop and so does “flowers”, and when she lays down the flowers, her summer is over and her innocence disappear.
At the beginning of the story, Myop is a innocent, happy, 10-year-old girl. Alice’s diction shows that Myop’s childhood is really happy, she doesn’t need to care about everything, she just need to live happily. However, one day she makes her own path to the forest, something has changed. I think her own path foreshadows the thing happens after. If she doesn’t go there by herself, the story can’t move on. Myop goes a strange way which isn’t the way she goes to forest with her mom so that she finds a dead man.
