The Importance of Literary devices and symbols in Life of Pi Symbols outline and give meaning to life. They can be used to teach morals and they can represent modern society and civilization. In various cases, symbols can be destructive and eventually lead to chaos, ruination, and can have negative impact on the community and its people. In the novel Life of Pi the author, Yann Martel, mentions symbolism throughout the course of the novel. Symbolism plays a crucial role and a critical literary device in the novel. Without Orange Juice Pi would have been hopeless and depressed for the rest of the journey. She entertains Pi and brings the image of Pi’s family back in to Pi’s memory. Pi’s enthusiasm and eagerness is shown as he awaits the fortune and the rescue day. Furthermore, Pi uses the word ‘hours’ rather than ‘days’ makes him desperate and builds in certainty to meet his parents. In the society, people provide hope and encourage each other to overcome a situation. The Orangutan represents the peaceful and the defenseless side of the community. Pi confesses about Orange Juice that it “… cannot defeat an adult male spotted hyena” (144). Orange Juice is defenseless in front of the hyena, despite the fact that she stands up for herself by beating the hyena on the head, the hyena fights back and devours Orange Juice. The Orangutan shows that it avoids chaos and aims for peacefulness and friendship towards everyone. In addition, Pi mentions in part two of the novel that the Orangutan “…remained gentle and unaggressive her whole life” (143). Pi remembers a flashback from the zoo in Pondicherry, India of the Orangutan. He mentions that it did not harm any person and it is a symbol of innocence and reconciliation. After the hyena kills the Orangutan, Pi experiences a transformation as he becomes savage and transforms from being a vegetarian, simple, and loving person to a brutal, raw meat eater, and a merciless beast.
