In today's society winning the lottery is extraordinary you get money without lifting a single finger. A girl in Canada just won the lottery on her 18th birthday, she was set for life without doing any of the work to earn the money she just got it handed to her. The lottery wasn’t like this in this short story, it wasn’t a good thing, it was actually a dreadful to win the lottery. “The Lottery”, by Shirley Jackson uses irony that reveals what the effects of blindly following traditions actually causes society. The lottery isn’t what it seems to be in this story, family’s turning on other families just so that their family doesn’t get hurt in the end, just for this tradition that they decided to do years before the people who are even getting affected now are hurt in the aftermath of it all. This lottery if you are picked, you have to be tolerable with it, because it’s what tradition is, and everyone is terrified to break tradition. Tradition is very important to people and they sometimes don’t realize the effects. Even Mr.Summers tried telling them that the box for the lottery isn’t right but no one listened to him they just minded their own business, and blew it off, and acting if it didn’t apply to their lives too. Families have to be stoned to death if their name is picked by their own neighbors and community, that is a tragic experience to have to do to the people who you know and grew up with.
