Use Of Irony In George Orwell's Animal Farm

Karl Marx, the inventor of Marxism or the combination of socialism and communism ideals once said, “Workers of the world unite; you have nothing to lose but your chains.” This quote strongly relates to George Orwell’s novel Animal Farm about animals rising up against their superiors for equality. Animal Farm reveals the inequality amongst the animals on the farm through the use of literary elements. George Orwell’s use of the literary technique irony, helps develops his central idea for Animal Farm. The animals of the farm revolted against their leader because of their determination of achieving equality. Animals of the farm wanting equality are a great example of the use of irony because of the three pigs. For example, the pigs wanted to have equality and pleaded to be an equal leader and yet they treated themselves differently. The author of Animal Farm relates the animals to people and events in communist countries through the use of symbolism. For example, the pigs name Old Majors teachings Animalism which has the same ideals of Communism. The animals throughout the novels closely relates to communist leaders such as Joseph Stalin, Czar Nicholas the 2nd, and Leon Trotsky. George Orwell also used the literary element of characterization to express his central idea for Animal Farm. For instance, Squealer can be indirectly characterized as manipulative because he lies to the other animals about having to have more rations of food to save himself. Napoleon, the other pig on the farm is persuasive in his leadership because he is persuading the animals on the farm that the things he does is alright.
