“A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner, is a type of a southern gothic story that takes the reader through a dark story of a woman who has selfish intentions of murder deep inside her. Southern gothic literature is a genre of southern writing that excites and keeps the reader on edge because of its exciting content. It has a variety of dark imagery and a negative mood that the character shows throughout the story. These types of stories always touch the darkest and scariest corners of the readers mind. Emily is driven by selfish and emotional feelings, which motivated her to murder her husband.

We understand that there is a big hole in her and he could be the new person in her life who could fill it up. Also Homer says “He is not the marrying type” she decides to take matters into her own hand. First she buys Homer a mens toiletry set, which shows he wants him for marriage. Then she goes to the pharmacy to buy arsenic to kill the “rat”. As we read the “rat” is actually talking about Homer. After he died she kept his dead body a room that she locked, so that she could fill up that lost and that empty feeling that she had when her father died. In the end, we see that she did plan to kill Homer for her own selfish and dark reasons and in the end poisons him. William Faulkner's story teaches us the idea that if your taking people for your own comfort and benefit it will drive you insane, and even to the point of killing someone.
In life people hold on to certain things that make them feel comfortable, protected and loved. When these feelings disappear, a person might do whatever it takes, or to go any extreme to get it back. In A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner, wee see how it is a great example of a southern gothic story. Faulkner shows us the dark side of Emily, and how she trys to deal with the gap and pain in her life without her father.
