As of today the green-light means to move forward. This term is, also a reference to the green traffic signal that is used to “go ahead” and “proceed with”. The Great Gatsby is about a poor man who falls in love with a wealthy girl and spends his life trying to impress her by becoming rich. No matter how many parties he tries to throws and how much money he has, he is still not good enough for her. F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the green light, which symbolizes Gatsby’s love for Daisy and the future that he has for her. The green light is used to represent Gatsby’s association with Daisy and the future he hopes to have with her. He uses the green light as a guide light to lead himself up to his ultimate goal that he has been working towards. Five years have passed since Daisy and Gatsby have seen one another. He has been away fighting in the war and also working to establish himself. He believed that the only way to win Daisy’s love back was become a wealthy man. When He says “It eluded us then, but that’s no matter tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther…”(180) No matter what happens they still can try again next time and reach farther to pursue his goals that he thinks that is still possible for them to be together. His love For Daisy never ends he will always love her and strives harder to get her even if he has to go over board he will do whatever it takes. Gatsby uses the green light as a guide light to lead himself up to his ultimate goal that he has been working towards. Though he constantly lost hope that he would ever have a chance, the guidance of the green light allowed him to continue persevering towards his goal.
