In The Devil’s Highway by Luis Alberto Urrea, the author retells a story of a group of immigrants who attempted to cross the border from Mexico into America. Throughout the novel, Urrea uses figurative language and syntax to prove the meaning that in order to grow as a community, there needs to be unity; making quick judgements about others can prevent people from uniting together. Towards the beginning of the novel, Urrea describes how the bodies of those who died crossing the border are treated in inspections for reports. He particularly describes how the deceased are referred to and states, “Some reports wittily call these men Juan Does. Jane Doe becomes Juana Doe” (Urrea 36).…
In “The Custom House” Nathaniel Hawthorne uses figurative language and negative diction to potray the US government in a negative light after losing his job at the customs house. Hawthrne compares the government to the national bird, the bald eagle. He describes the eagle as a “unhappy fowl, she appears, by the fierceness of her beak and eye” who “..has no great tenderness, even in her best of moods.” Hawthorne potrays the government as unhappy and rather mean with no kindness in it. She attacks those who sit under her for protection despite her vixenly looks and their itrustion onto her premises.…
James Baldwin’s “Sonny Blues” takes place during the jazz music era of 1957 in Harlem, New York. This story expresses the importance of a well found relationship between an older brother and young brother needing each other. The elements of character and figurative language are the most suitable elements of fiction that best describes the story “Sonny Blues”. In “Sonny Blues”, character is illustrated by the use of minor characters telling the readers of the unique qualities of the major character. The minor characters function as a foil to the major character.…
Metaphors: “Their eyes as brilliant and as wide as the night”, “Their manes the leaping ire of the wind”. These metaphors convey the etherealness of the atmosphere at that point of time. The poet uses these metaphors to once again compare simple objects with mysterious, eerie elements, suggestive of a dark night ahead. He uses these metaphors as a medium to chill the reader, and make the reader believe that something sinister has been going on in the poem. 12.…
“Fishhawk” was the first poem of the Classic of Poetry, the earliest poetry collection of East Asia (p.1322). In contrast to many poems in the “Airs of Domain” that propagated Confucianism, “Fishhawk” is a simple love poem. The poem revolves around a young man who was “tormented by his desire for a girl”(p.1322). While this poem is labeled as a “romantic folk song”(p.1322), the good use of literary elements, syntax, and language added a bit of tint to the love story.…

The contemporary postcolonial literature by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, Hanif Kureishi, M. Nourbese Philip and Zadie Smith combines the concepts of language and gender to show differences in cultural identity and, especially expose the difficulties these differences bring in the assimilation of the native culture and the colonialist culture. Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, Kureishi, Philip and Smith all have different approaches and experiences when it comes to the intersections of these concepts and cultures, and their writing shows how language and gender creates a division between the colonists’ culture and the native cultures of the authors. Ngũgĩ’s essay “The Language of the African Literature”, shows how the introduction of the English language into his…
Last Stop on Market Street is an award winning picture book about a little black boy called CJ and his grandmother who take the bus to work at a soup kitchen after church on Sundays. The author uses words and phrases very effectively within this book to really paint a picture of the city and it's people. At the beginning of this book the author uses figurative language to describe the air as smelling 'like freedom, but it also smelled like rain' this phrase goes a long way in identifying the setting as being beautiful and open, in addition, it also indicates the rain had just begun (Tunnell, 2015, p.18). Another example of the author using a phrase to tell the reader a lot of information is when CJ's Nana tells CJ that the tree's are drinking through a straw. CJ is aid to look for some time for a straw to no avail, the author uses this short passage to tell us that CJ is young and…
Although many of Billy Collins’ short poems feature a first-person perspective, readers should not necessarily assume that the voice belongs to the poet himself. Indeed, at times, Collins speaks in the voice of a distinct character whose experiences and thoughts reveal a specific situation and crisis. In “The Waitress,” for example, the speaker’s observations indicate that he dines out often enough to recognize the behaviours common to restaurant servers, but the detail of his description suggests that observing the waitress on this occasion has become a personally meaningful activity. The speaker’s detailed observation of his apparently indifferent waitress gives way to a romantic fantasy that reveals him to be a lonely man contemplating…
Wallpaper With a Thousand Words “The Yellow Wallpaper” is an important story, but digging has to be done to see so. The author Charlotte Perkins displays a feminist interpretation in an impressive way. Her use of metaphors brings out the true meaning behind this story. The wallpaper represents the way women are treated in our society, and the author tells a story of a “madwoman” to represent this overall theme. The house is the whole backbone to the story and is a one of the metaphors used.…

I have chosen Question One: Emile Bronte’s Wuthering Heights discuss how an attention to figurative language can help in an analysis of literary texts as I enjoyed reading the text and the many qualities that made it such an enjoyable read. When we read something we usually take it as it is but that is exactly what figurative language is not. When we read certain expressions or words with a different meaning it is known as figurative language which is different from literal interpretation. Figurative language goes beyond the meanings of the words that we read which give us, the readers a greater insight into the piece. There are many types of figurative language such as symbolism, metaphors and similes which are all seen in Emily Bronte's 'Wuthering…
