Use Of Fear In Animal Farm

Improved Essays
How do some governments have so much power and control over their citizens? Fear. The use of fear is a highly effective and widely used tactic to gain control over others. George Orwell’s Animal Farm is a clear cut example of how fear is used to manipulate and gain control. The pigs in this story represent the communist government of the Soviet Union, and the animals represent the people. The pigs frighten the other animals with the threat of Jones’ return, Napoleon’s dogs, and Squealer’s propaganda to increase power and retain control of the farm.
All animals on the farm dread the thought of Mr. Jones coming back, reclaiming the farm, and bringing wrath down on all who rebelled. The pigs instill the fear of the treacherous farmer’s return

Squealer (Pig) uses propaganda to manipulate and frighten the animals to retain power. It was discovered that Snowball, since being outcasted, had been vandalising the farm at night. Squealer takes advantage of this by telling the animals that Snowball is with other farms who are planning to attack. Squealer does this, of course, to frighten the animals so the pigs may stay a step above. ““...a most terrible thing has been discovered. Snowball has sold himself to Frederick of Pinchfield Farm, who is even now plotting to attack us and take our farm away from us!” ...The animals were stupefied.” (p. 79-80). The animals were unhappy when it was discovered that the pigs had been consuming all of the apples and milk. Squealer, yet again, uses this to the pig’s advantage. Squealer tells the animals that if the pigs need these foods to maintain health and well-being. The animals are also reminded that the pigs are brainworkers, and that the entire farm depends on the pigs. Fear is now instilled in the animals, the fear of the farm failing if the pigs are not healthy enough to run it. This results in increased control for the pigs. "You do not imagine, I hope, that we pigs are doing this in a spirit of selfishness and privilege? Many of us actually dislike milk and apples. I dislike them myself. Whether it was through the threat of Jones’ return, and the chaos that would bring. Or through Napoleon’s dogs and the terrorization the animals were given. Even through Squealer’s propaganda, and the sly, manipulative words used. No matter which form used, all pushed fear into the hearts of the animals. The end result: Power and Control for the

Particular objects and figures being represented in forms misconceptions inevitably contribute to specific parties exercising greater authority over others due to the reinforcement of inaccurate perceptions which can indirectly bestow more power upon those who are reinforcing these ideas. In Animal Farm, a pig named Squealer, who is also a persuasive orator, manipulates the animals into accepting their lies: “He [Napoleon] had seemed to oppose the windmill, simply as a manoeuvre to get rid of Snowball, who was a dangerous character and a bad influence” (Orwell 18). It can be noted throughout the story that Squealer uses certain individuals to blame liabilities on, specifically Snowball. Squealer intentionally characterizes Snowball as a poor influence, utilizing him as a scapegoat for any events in where there is a discrepancy such as the…

In this quote, Squealer not only says that the pigs need these apples and that milk, but also that it’s not their pleasure. Here, Squealer turns all the opinions of the animals the other way, making them think it’s not a privilege, but a miss fortune. That is why, again, I think that Squealer is very important in the role of power take over, and that without the pigs might not have had all these…

To begin with, Squealer uses manipulative language, he claims that the pigs have been eating the milk and apples to maintain health when that is not the case. Squealer tells his audience,”milk and apples contain substances absolutely necessary to the well-being of a pig,” to justify the pigs actions (Orwell ). This event portrays persuasion because Squealer deceives the animals by insisting that the pigs are only doing this for the benefit of everyone and not because they enjoy the food. In other words, Squealer denies the fact that the pigs do indeed enjoy having milk and apples and also fails to address that the pigs do have more privileges than the others do. Next, one day the animals discover that the milk and apples have gone missing because…

This large excerpt of the novel is full of dishonesty and persuasiveness, since Orwell creates Squealer as a very persuasive, aware character, as he knows exactly what he is doing, and what will be the outcome from his actions. Squealer states that the pigs are not indulging out of selfishness and privilege (which they are), he himself dislikes milk and apples, and gives examples that are supposedly backed up by scientific evidence regarding why the pigs need the nutrition supplied by milk and apples. By doing so, Squealer is providing falsehoods for persuasion out of the pigs’ selfishness to convince the animals that by giving up what is rightfully theirs, they are doing the right thing for the development of the farm. To conclude his statement,…

An example of this is when four young pigs attempt to protest but are quickly brought to a halt by the dogs intimidating growls, “ ...all four of them sprang to their feet and began speaking at once. But suddenly the dogs sitting round Napoleon let out deep menacing growls” (69). The dogs intimidating and threatening growls prevents them from continuing their protest against Napoleon’s decision to no longer have meetings. Although many of the other animals couldn’t organize their thoughts to also object or at least challenge Napoleon’s decision, the four young pigs could have helped the others come up with an argument had they not been silenced by the dogs of which were under Napoleon’s command. Another example of how Napoleon uses fear and intimidation to control the other animals is when he begins to execute other animals.…
