Mini Essay #1: U.S Political Parties Some extant political parties in the United States today that hold different positions on key issues. The six major political parties are the Republican Party, the Democratic Party, the Libertarian Party, the Green Party, the Constitution Party, and the Peace and Freedom Party.
The Republican Party is one of the parties of the United States’ two-party system. Some key platforms of the Republican Party are the Electoral College, traditional marriage, coal plants, the right to own a gun, rights to private property, making abortion illegal, tougher border control, getting rid of Obamacare, and bringing education down to state or local control. The Republican Party only acknowledges traditional marriage between a man and a woman. It believes that a child that grows up in a traditional marriage household will become more successful later in life. The Republican Party believes in having more coal plants throughout the United States as a source of energy because it is environmentally friendly and coals are easy to obtain. Republicans are against gun control because they think that it violates the Second Amendment and limits self-defense. Owning private property is supported by Republicans because the Fifth Amendment states that only the government is limited to owning land, not citizens. Republicans want to make abortion illegal because they believe that it damages the health of pregnant women. Some major platforms of the Peace and Freedom Party are to double the minimum wage, get rid of nuclear weapons, have free healthcare, and have free education. The Peace and Freedom Party supports doubling the minimum wage because it believes that it will provide more job opportunities and enable families to afford basic necessities. The Peace and Freedom Party wants to halt the production of nuclear weapons and get rid of it to create a sense of peace between the United States and other countries around the globe. Seeing that healthcare is a basic right for individuals, the Peace and Freedom Party wants healthcare to be free so that every individual has the opportunity to seek medical help when needed . The Peace and Freedom Party supports free education for students because it believes that it can play a role in getting rid of racism and inequality present in many schools. In addition, free education will give children the opportunity to get an education without being limited or privileged based on their family income.
