It shows that before 1990s the growth rate was normal and in the next three decades the growth rate of urbanization is on the rise. The growth rate of urbanization has increased nearly by 10 per cent in the period between 1991 and 2001 and from 2001 to 2011 it has declined almost by 5 per cent. Table -1 indicates both the above average and below average level distribution of urbanization in all the districts of Tamil Nadu in 2001 and 2011, census period. The average growth of urbanization in Tamil Nadu is 44.05 per cent for 2001 and 48.40 for 2011. In 2001 and 2011 census, Tamil Nadu had 30 districts and 32 districts respectively. During the 19th century, when the British ruled the country, people were recruited from Thanjavur, Tirunelveli and Madras Presidency to work in the Malaya plantation (slavery). But today, in the globalized world people meet many problems in every day life. Mostly the people with poor financial background migrate in order to support their families. In past two decades, large number of people have migrated from rural to urban and urban to urban (from small town to metro cities) areas for various reasons. In India, Tamil Nadu has the highest urbanization growth state which proves the fact that the people have bees migrating from backward districts to urban districts of Tamil Nadu. The present study has used the 2001 Census migration (D series) data. It was available on the basis of place of birth and place of last residence concept. According to the 2001 census, the total migration was 1.58 crore. The inter district and intra district migrations were 40.96 lakhs and 1.08 crore
