The Heat Island Effect harms people in ways that have to be understood in order to make a change. In urban areas, the temperature can be from “1-12 C”(Allen, Kate) depending on how extreme the case is. Cities are much warmer than normal, and will affect people’s health. One of the biggest contributors being air conditioners and engines from cars raising the temperature of a certain area . This effect can eventually lead to worse air and water quality because there are lots more wasteful pollutants being pumped into the air. (Urban Heat Island). Many architects and construction workers were unaware of the material that were used to construct the city would eventually contribute to the heat effect through the heat becoming absorbed through buildings (Urban Heat Island). “A study looking at heat-stress related mortality in five cities of Southern Ontario between 1980 and 1996 showed that death in the elderly (over 64 years) were significantly increased during these times and that ongoing urban development and sprawl were expected to intensify heat-stress conditions” (Smoyer-Daniel KE). With this heat, people are much more likely to turn on their air …show more content…
Peel and Durham have similar profiles to York. Household average Vehicles Household average Trips/day Daily trips/ person Median auto driver trip length (km) The University of Toronto’s Joint Program in Transportation also found that the average ownership rate for automobiles increased .0045 for every kilometer outside of the downtown Toronto core (Miller, 2004). Increased motor vehicle emissions cause increased levels of air pollution and GHGs (greenhouse gases). Air pollution affects health directly, while increased GHG emissions contribute to climate change, with numerous resulting negative effects on public health.” (Bray, Riina, et al ).
“The relationship between air pollution and respiratory problems, such as asthma and lung cancer, is well documented” (Resnik, David). This is increases and puts people who has asthma at risk and also degrades the quality of air. As the traffic increases the numbers only get worse and people are left to suffer. Air pollution is already contributing to global warming and by increasing urban sprawl it would continue to add onto this
