The landscape study area into which the proposed medium-density suburban patch is to be inserted is a 180km2 portion of land with its centre located approximately 6 kilometres south of the Brisbane CBD (refer to Figure 1). Consisting of a mix of developed and undeveloped land, the area in question is typical of much of the greater Brisbane region. Viewed through the lens of the P-C-M model, it is dominated by a relatively homogenous matrix of medium-density development interspersed with patches of commercial-industrial development, vegetation, and cleared open space (refer to Figure 2). It is these final two categories of patch that have been deemed appropriate for the proposed development to occur.…

Gentrification is seen by most of the public as the buying and renovating of houses, stores and buildings in deteriorated urban neighborhoods by wealthier individuals which increases property values and displaces low-income families. If we look at the Oxford English Dictionary’s definition we see it is defined as the process by which an urban area is rendered middle-class (“gentrifi’cation, n”). Gentrification is more than a renovation to an area or neighborhood, it is a controversial topic of class and race. The term was first used by urban geographer Ruth Glass in the 1960’s to describe the phenomenon of the upper middle-class buying property in London’s East End. She meant it as a negative term using the word gentry, or ruling class, to show her concern for the displaced…

Gentrification brings not only an increase in tax revenue that benefits the Mission District, but also San Francisco and California overall, which results in increased economic activity, more jobs, a boost in land values, and more public investment in buildings and infrastructure. Since 1995, over 100,000 people have been added to San Francisco’s population, and the Mission specifically has seen an increase of 13% to their total population (“Mission Community Organizing”). This is beneficial because the rapid population growth fuels jobs and opportunities while bringing in more tax revenue to the city. Millions of dollars come through San Francisco through the tax revenue that the gentrification process brings (Poblet). Business Columnist,…

It would be a cliché to keep on talking about how great The Beatles and the football atmosphere are but, except for the experience as a typical tourist, I would be more likely to share my feelings about this city based on my daily life. Liverpool is a city with stunning views. I am impressed with the waterfront and especially obsessed with watching the sunset in Albert Dock, which is believed to be the model existence of the art docking system. I was born in Wuhan, a big city sitting alongside Yangzi River.…

Australia’s population growth would have significant effects on the agricultural landscapes and its sustainability. Population growth would inevitably lead to urban sprawl towards the outer urban fringes where agricultural lands generally located. In addition, a case study of Sydney was analysed to visualise the full extent, population growth can have on the agricultural industry.…
