The journey of this Houston community is one of amazing progress! The journey includes the schools, homes and the addition of a Lone Star College. These were the effects of the outgrowing of the qualities that labeled them as a “ghetto” community. Although this community has seen tremendous improvement, the effects of Harvey has ruined homes, damaged vehicles, and affected the beauty of the community. Every time a so-called ghetto neighborhood is mention on television, it is always in reference to the unemployed, under employed, Section 8 or welfare recipients. If you listen to the television, you would think that the aforementioned types of people are the only people who live in these kinds of neighborhoods. During the residency I became more self-aware of my ability to be able to take on new situations. I also learned that being a school counselor is truly what I want to do.
