Name of agency and location
The agency that I have been placed at is the Women’s Transitional Living Center (WTLC) in Orange, California. The community that the shelter serves is comprised of survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking as well as victims of mental illness and substance abuse (WTLC, n.d.a). They also serve especially vulnerable populations such as transgender persons, emancipated youth, and persons coming out of the prison system (WTLC, n.d.a). This agency is the third oldest domestic violence program in the United States, and the oldest in Orange County (WTLC, n.d.a).

How are the clients greeted by staff? I was extremely nervous before meeting with the Lisa. I can imagine that a client would also be nervous while waiting in the waiting room of the agency, since there are so many unexpected elements to their new living situation. As we met offsite I did not get a chance to see how the staff greets their clients, but Lisa explained that they have staff specially trained to answer the agency’s hotline number and answer questions about the shelter, including how to be accepted and how to get there. The staff is trained to be warm and supportive of the clients (L. Eaton, personal communication, October 7, 2016).

I was extremely nervous before I met with Lisa, the field instructor. I arrived at the Starbucks 20 minutes early to ensure that we would have a table to sit at, and ordered a drink so that the employees would not be angry that I was sitting at the table without spending money, and waited for Lisa to arrive. She arrived 3 minutes past our meeting time, which is not unusual because of traffic, but made me wonder if I had messed up the date and time. I triple checked the email that she sent to make sure that I was at the right location on the right day and time, and tried to google a picture of her as well to make sure that she was not already there. It was an extremely nerve wracking 20 minutes to say the

I am currently employed at the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence, CCADV, as the Director of Membership Organization Services. CCADV oversees the eighteen domestic violence programs in the State of Connecticut and works to change social conditions through policy, advocacy, public awareness and community education (Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 2015). CCADV advocates at a national and state level to develop and implement policies that will improve Connecticut’s response to domestic violence. Some of the key changes that CCADV has facilitated in recent years to domestic violence laws and policies in our state include, securing funds for 24-hour staffing at all of Connecticut domestic violence shelters, strengthening civil restraining orders and criminal protective orders to ensure gun forfeiture by offenders, as well as extending the length of civil restraining orders, enhancing the definitions of strangulation, threatening and stalking to achieve greater protection for victims, implementing a statewide Model Law Enforcement Policy on Family Violence as the standard by which all law enforcement in our state respond to domestic violence, and increasing housing protections for victims by allowing early lease termination when they’re in danger (Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 2015). CCADV does not provide direct services to clients traditionally but often we work with clients who need greater resources than our programs can provide for them.…

Everything Isn’t Always What It Seems Salvation Army put out this image of a young girl who is laying on the ground covered in cuts and bruises. She has a busted open lip and a black eye. As she lays on the ground, the background has a plain and a colorless effect has been given to it by only using grey and white. The dress she is wearing is apart of the “viral dress” argument. A dress, which was originally black and blue yet seemed to be white and gold to many people.…

ASSESSMENT OF ORGANIZATIONAL SERVICES OVERVIEW There are several agencies within Montgomery County, Texas that provide victims of elder abuse with assistance. In order to learn more about these specific services and how agencies collaborate with one another, five different agencies were interviewed: Adult Protective Services, the Department of Aging and Disability, the Montgomery County Women’s Center, Tri-County Behavioral Healthcare, and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. Adult Protective Services, also known as APS, began in the mid 1970’s when Congress passed Title 20 of the Social Security Act, which required states to protect children, elder adults, and adults with disabilities from abuse, neglect, and exploitation. They are a…

The mission of Safe Harbor is dedicated to eliminating domestic violence through prevention, education, and intervention. I really enjoyed the time that I served there doing my 30 hours of volunteer work. They really made me feel needed and welcome by all the staff and clients. I decided, however, that I think I would be capable of a career in this field. Just in the small amount of time that I volunteered there, my heart tells me this is a field of social work that I would love to be in.…

Neighborhood governments pass statutes, or laws that are passed by a political subdivision, for instance, a town, city, or area. Neighborhood orders begin an undefined way from some other law, as an idea. These musings may start from an area government official, a private subject, or a social event or board. These musings are then familiar with a committee by strategy for talks. After this, a city board or remarkable board chitchat on paying little respect to whether to pass the arrangement to the accompanying stage.…

During my junior year in college, I started volunteering at the University of Minnesota Fairview Hospital to gain medical experience and to work with patients as a Patient Visitor. I was a bit nervous about the position because I had to go to visit patients and have discussions. There was no outline about specific topics that I should discuss with the patients which made me a bit more nervous. My supervisor assured me that things would be fine and that conversations would flow well.…

I am not currently in a field placement, but my first placement was at a homeless facility for veterans. The most common theme among this population was childhood trauma and complex trauma. This was true for the veteran’s I worked with and the overall population at the facility (based on conversations with my supervisor). There were many ways which their past trauma and military trauma impact this population, with the most common impact seen by myself were issues with addiction, interpersonal relationship issues, trust issues, legal issues, and a wide range of mental health disorders.…

The rapidly growing LGBTQI community is facing serious diversity issues within the United States. A goal of mine related to human diversity that has had a tremendous influence on developing my interest in social work is to help develop better programs and more assistance for the LGBTQI community. More specifically, I would like to come up with better ways to assist LGBTQI individuals who have fallen victim to intimate partner violence or domestic violence. Throughout my undergraduate coursework, I have learned that many of the services offered to heterosexual domestic violence victims are not compatible for LGBTQI victims. Their unfair treatment starts with a simple phone call to the police.…

In his book titled Sidewalk, author Mitchell Duneier distinguishes between physical disorder and social disorder within an urban society. He and other sociologists including, Bernard E. Harcourt, Mike Davis and Sampson and Raudenbush challenge Wilson and Kelling’s “broken windows” theory, which I will go into more detail about. Later on in the Essay, I will reflect on Part 1 of Duneier’s work, titled “The Informal Life of the Sidewalk”. Throughout the text, we will “meet” several men and women trying to make “an honest living” on the sidewalks of Greenwich Village in New York City. Overall, Duneier sheds light on the lives of impoverished people, who seem to believe in the saying, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”…

I also did well at maintaining conversation flow by asking questions and being genuinely interested in what she had to say. I deserve a big pat on the back for keeping my anxiety in check. Teri and the crew also deserve credit for my nerves of steel because they made a new environment feel familiar. If I had the chance to do this again I would ensure that I was 10 minutes early; there’s really no excuse for tardiness. I would also be more careful with the questions that I asked to reduce the risk of offending people.…

Reflecting on this specific moment later that that day, I realize when we stopped here and Jessica introduced me to the “team lead,” explaining how this is a person whom I could report to and/or speak if I had any questions or when she is not around, that I hadn’t truthfully heard all the details of what was mentioned. Had I heard all that was mentioned, and was my usual self I would have clarified in advance, why am I proceeding into this classroom, being handed this binder, in addition to, does this conclude my tour. At the ending of the placement day is when I finally realized that yes my tour had come to an end, and that I was given the “client information binder” and brought into this room as this is the group that I have been assigned to work…
