Being an African American male with an interest in Medicine has brought forth its own challenges. I don’t come from the stereotypical extended family of doctors who have practiced medicine for decades. My parents are immigrants from Ghana, a country in West Africa. They didn’t have much, but managed to create a living for themselves and their family. I live in Uptown, which is on the north side of Chicago. I am a first generation college student, but more importantly I will one day become the first Physician in my family.
Throughout my academic career I have been involved with numerous student organizations and leadership positions. Involvement in organizations such as the Urban Health Program has motivated me strive for more. I became involved with the Urban Health Program in my desperate time of need. The first two years of college presented many obstacles that almost led me to discontinue my education. I overcame those obstacles and soon learned that I could aspire for more and could become a difference in someone's life. I have a passion in Health inequality at the global level and I will someday become a healthcare physician with an interest in Global health. This passion has led to my involvement as a research fellow in the Office Of Community Engagement and Implementation Sciences. Through this fellowship I have been able to educate underserved communities around the UIC area, on Cancer that affects a vast majority of them. This fellowship has also inspired me to not only become a physician researcher but also an
