I often use two separate analogies to describe how the opportunity gap affects students from separate social classes. The first, involves a group of students from various socioeconomic backgrounds all making an attempt to reach the top floor of a skyscraper building. The students from the more affluent background are granted access to the elevator, while students from a middle-class economic setting are placed on an escalator, while the students who come from low-income based households are directed to the back of the building to use the, dilapidated, wooden stairs with no rail for support.
All three of the demographics of children were given means to make it to the top of the building but, we obviously know that the more affluent class reached the top with ease, and much faster than the children who were sent to find the top of the building by other means. The second analogy involves three separate schools. One of which is located in an urban setting, the second is within the parameters of an upper middle class suburban neighborhood, while the third school is located in an affluent neighborhood. Bearing in mind the fact that nearly …show more content…
If we take half of the expenses listed above and invest them in the public school system for that neighborhood then we would see that the urban school receives 500 dollars, the suburban school would receive 5,000 dollars, while the affluent school would receive 50,000 dollars in funding. We see here that schools are funded differently based on the socioeconomic status of its surrounding community members.
One would eventually understand that even if all schools were created with the same intentions and goals it would be impossible for all of them to have the same resources because of the current method of school funding distribution. The lower-income school would still be spending money on basic schooling necessities such as desks and books for each student, while the more affluent schools have an abundance of funds after purchasing necessities with which they can purchase new laptops and tablets for each individual student within that school.
For the final section of my essay I will describe a comparison between the quality of life for urban students and Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs. Maslow’s
