Urban Community Interview Paper

When attending the university of south Alabama you will come across different people from different parts of the world. You have individuals who have moved from rural community come too mobile, Alabama where it’s an urban community and a different panorama. I interviewed three individuals who lived in different parts of Alabama. Tykeylia Crenshaw is from Greenville, Alabama, which is a rural community; Erica Staley, is from Andalusia, Alabama a rural community, and Chalnadra Gooden, is from Hoover, Alabama, which is an urban community outside of Birmingham. Moving to Mobile, Alabama was a challenge for the three individuals. Their challenges, which will be discussed throughout this paper, are: social class, family structure, social problems, and how diverse Mobile is from their hometown. Glaeser and Sacedote stated, (1999)“ In Urban areas where streets are more crowded, more victims will wander within the range of the street criminal.” Urban communities face more crime than rural area since more people that are living in the city;“ Community size does make a difference, as crime rates are higher in urban than in rural areas. Violent and property crime rates in our largest cities are three to four times as high as the rates in rural area.” (Axelrod, 1956). Living in a community that is surrounded by poverty can also increase the chances of crime in the area. Transitioning from a rural community you do not see as much crime than you see in urban communities. In Greenville, Alabama and Andalusia, Alabama people are so far out from one another that there is no contact between individuals. Erica stated, “ My neighbors stay a football field away from our house, there is nothing but land between us. We hardly see our neighbors unless they are outside when we drive
