Urban Barcoding Experiment In High School

Improved Essays
“START!” my science teacher yelled. I lunged for the beans with my chopsticks. Grabbing one, I placed it in my bowl and immediately went for another. Struggling with my 6th bean, I looked at my friend effortlessly depositing beans into her bowl with tweezers as the timer ran out. How could this be? Unwilling to disprove my hypothesis, I tried again with tweezers. Ten, Eleven, Twelve?!

I loved the unexpected results of an experiment and there was always so much more to learn. Since that science class in middle school, biology has always piqued my interest. As a result, I took on various opportunities in high school to broaden my understanding of the subject, such as taking advanced classes and completing research for the Urban Barcoding Project.

As I careened along the course for my first ever practice, I was struck with how unusual it was for me to do something so daring. Usually very cautious, I had only been asked to join Buggy a week prior, and there I was, lying only a few inches off of the ground in a motorless buggy, with my hands in front of me to steer. Peering through the windshield with an assortment of protective gear, I watched the track zoom by at 25 miles per hour. Buggy is a sport unique to Carnegie Mellon University, where students from all majors join to build and compete buggies. Looking back, there are many parallels between my experience with the sport, and the development of my career aspirations.…

“Thank you.” This was the simple yet meaningful response a patient’s husband gave to the emergency physician as I observed from the corner of the room. It was determined through a plethora of laboratory studies and clinical intuition that the patient was suffering from hepatorenal syndrome, secondary to her battle with metastatic colorectal cancer that spread to her liver. Her husband knew the prognosis, but this time she would be unable to recover. Despite the manic pace of the emergency department, Dr. Gregg took time to carefully explain the patient’s situation.…

Honors committee, As long as I can remember I have sought challenges in academics. Until only recently I didn't know why I pushed myself as hard as I have in school, but now I understand it is because I truly love learning. For me, discovering something new or unknown, teaching myself a new skill, or learning more about the world around me is one of the most gratifying things in my life. This is part of why I think I should be admitted into the honors program here at the University of Iowa. As a young child I was insatiably curious, asking my mother questions ad nausea, never satisfied with simple answers.…

Marine biology has always been a passion of mine ever since I first heard about it when I was four years old. My family has a deep-running connection to the ocean so when they realized how interested I was in science, they suggested marine biology. I loved the concept of studying unknown creatures that sit miles below the surface of our planet that no human has ever seen. I’ve read many textbooks and field guides over the years, which started as an amusing pastime. However, the more I read, the more I became completely and utterly engrossed in the subject which eventually shaped me into what I am today.…

While studying the upper level science courses, I was prompted to think in ways I never had before. I became a tutor, however to my surprise, I found myself teaching the Spanish language to biology students. My ten years of experience studying the language prior to college became a valuable asset not only from an academic standpoint, but it has also allowed me to form relationships with people I would never have met otherwise. College was also the point in my path where I was introduced to the greatest invention ever made, the whiteboard. Courses such as organic chemistry and physics were of the more intimidating on the list of requirements for a biology degree.…

    Essay On Shadowing

While at Rutgers I have had the opportunity to expand my knowledge on living systems from the level of a single molecule to an entire organism. I have been able to do this both in the classroom and while shadowing a physician. While these two types of learning are very different, they both are vital aspects of having a holistic education in the biological sciences. Through my major in Cell Biology and Neuroscience, I have also been able to build on my biology foundation by delving more deeply into neuroscience, the facet of the life sciences that most interests me. I also have had hands-on experience working at the cellular level in my laboratory and have developed a comfort with the material allowing me to explain it to others.…

Empathising with her struggles from an early age made me aware of the reliance on our eyesight. Acknowledging my ambition beforehand made me choose A-level subjects related to optometry.…

In my first semester of college, I have been exposed to so much and I have learned so much. Learning Basic Medical Science has allowed me to learn a variety of new things that I had never even heard of before or done before like immunohistochemistry, solving case studies, and T1/T2 translational research. Immunohistochemistry was really interesting and complex. At first, I overlooked it because I thought it was my over my head and not applicable to me at the moment. Then, over time I noticed that we talked about it several class periods, so clearly it had some significance to us currently.…
