I believe in the ancient saying “it takes a village to raise a child”, as I have experienced it in my own development as a member of society. Although, in my case the village consists of a variety of programs and clubs that have molded me to who I am today. As an involved individual, I have noticed I have benefitted educationally, and socially as well.
I began high school being a member in New Mexico Tech’s Upward Bound Program. Through this program, Loyola Marymount University for an on-campus stay. This experience primarily allowed me to be away from parents for the first time in my life, those who always had a protective glance over me. Being that I have two older siblings, my parents always found themselves being over protective of who they thought to be their baby. This week long separation allowed for me to finally understand that as I grew older, I needed

After I returned home, I went to a nearby restaurant and ordered food on my own without the support of my family being near me, my family really did not expect that from me. In addition, to teaching me some independence, the experience allowed me to learn how it feels to live in a dorm room, as well as eat food prepared on campus. I joined Upward Bound because I knew since middle school I wished to continue onto college after high school. As a result, I aimed for straight A’s, the program requires a certain GPA in order for me to attend further trips, I have since maintained that expectation. For this reason, I am now a top ten student, and I can say I am proud to be. It has taken long hours of commitment and social sacrifice to achieve this, but it has also allowed for me to create a greater connection and footprint on campus. My teachers always appreciate that I am the student who frequently asks questions, and also

Ever since middle school, my parents have told me to participate in as many clubs and opportunities offered to me, but I never listened to them until high school. During my years at high school: I have participated in the National Academy of Future Physicians, a college ready seminar class, became the Director of Spending of the student government, and I have been accepted into the UCLA Medical Shadowing Program. Due to my experience as a leader, my interest in the medical field, and my academic achievements, I was given the opportunity to take part in these life changing programs. Not only have I gained experience in the medical field, I have gained experience in the real world outside of high school. Through these experiences, I applied the…

Many people characterize their home as safe, secure, or at least comforting. My home was a bit … different. After leaving their home in Nigeria, my parents had to jump from home to home constantly moving me and my family until they could learn how to properly settle in America. My parents were very caring and helpful and kept trying to move us to places where we would have a chance at success. When we finally settled their seemed to only be one logical thing to do... help other immigrants settle here!…

Having gone through what I did, I never truly had a plan for the future. I knew I had to attend college but it was not until I was recruited by the local TRiO program that I truly believed that there could be a future for me. ConnCAP/Upward Bound was established by the Higher Education Act of 1965 to help low-income first-generation students realize their full potential and attain their goal of completing high school and obtaining higher education. The teachers and students I met through this program are who I call my second family.…

In Ian Frazier’s essay “In Praise of Margins,” he sees marginal places and activates valuable. The very word marginal to Ian Frazier has a simple meaning of a “negative tinge” (Frazier) where it is defined as actions and decisions that are non-goal oriented, or without purpose. In Frazier’s Own life, a marginal activity and a place for him and his friends were out in the woods as it was there “part-time address, destination, purpose, and excuse” (Frazier). However, growing up Frazier and his friends had the woods as their marginal activity which was often seen by society as unbeneficial. But, from an academic perspective, I agree with Frazier that marginal activates are important.…

Standing under the familiar radiant heat, the gentle glow on my skin reminded me of the many summers I spent being complacent in Washington. However, surrounding me were kids from numerous families who knew nothing about complacency. They were always moving, always multitasking, and always working; I wondered how migrant farm worker families coped with such a restless lifestyle compared to mine. For the past four summers, I traveled with the St. Anthony Parish youth group on mission trips. Most recently, I spent the last two summers in Bellingham serving the migrant farm worker communities through the Agape Mission program.…

“With great power comes great responsibility” being the oldest of nine I have an abundance of both responsibility and expectations to uphold. One thing that was stressed was the importance of giving back to those that come after me. Over the last three years I have done many things that help those around and in my community. One of the most recent events was during the summer during “Gospel Music Workshop of America”. The next event occurred after that was also in the summer in Brooklyn.…

The Advancement Via Individual Organization also known as AVID gives us many chances to do community service, however, the one academic program that caught my attention was Think Together Program at Tracy Elementary. Think Together is a program designed to help young students from K-12, to become productive adults and responsible, contributing members of society by tutoring, mentoring, inspiring, and nurturing kids. There were several steps that I had to complete before I began volunteering in the program, such as going to a training orientation and review. On my first day of volunteering, they had made me work inside of an office doing paperwork. At first, the kids in the program were nervous to ask for help because they thought I would judge…

I worked my way into Upward Bound, and all Honors and A.P. courses. I joined robotics, eventually earning the captain position. I relished the ability that robotics gave me to eat with a new family who ate together in quiet conversation about goals and hilarious actions taken throughout the day. I was able to escape life at home until 8:30 p.m. every day in the winter. I also found a greater love for my Catholic faith.…

I am a first-generation college student, before I enrolled at NAU no one in my family had ever gone to a university. That fall, when I decided to go through Formal Recruitment and join a sorority my family thought it would be a mistake and did not approve. I found a safe place in Fraternity and Sorority Life I found mentors and I figured out who I wanted to become.
