“We are very much at the mercy of what happens in Washington DC” said Sarah Hass, Program Director. In Trumps, Skinny budget that has come out there has been a reduction in funding to the department of education specifically in TRIO funding of about twelve percent. If this were to be implemented it would be up to the department of education to decide if all TRIO programs will be cut or if specific ones will lose funding. As of right now, the situation remains unclear as to whether or not the program will be receiving cuts.

Currently, the program serves eleven schools Putnam, Skylar, Green City, Milan, Knox, Kirksville, Moberly, La Plata, Westran, Cairo and Macon. Their goal is to serve students who may not have access to the things necessary to attend college. Typically they look for applicants who are first generation students or low-income students. They offer many services to help prepare these students for college life. During the school year, they travel to the schools that are affiliated with the program and tutor its participants as well as help them with ACT prep. “We also do workshops on soft skills things like time management and assertiveness as well as provide information on scholarships and help students fill out the FAFSA” sid Erika Sterup, Assistant Director of the program. During the summer the students come to campus for six weeks to live in the dorms and take classes to help them get acclimated to college
