Scott Fitzgerald. One of the main characters in this novel is Jay Gatsby, who is a rich, mysterious man that no one seems to know anything about, despite the fact that he hosts lavish parties that many people attend. Instead of actually getting to know him, people spread rumors about who he is. Gatsby is the outsider in a crowd at his parties, and that’s how many people are today on social media. Most people I know use some form of social media like Instagram or Snapchat. They’re constantly posting pictures, adding to stories, or writing messages that they share with hundreds of followers. Although some of these followers might include friends or relatives, many of the people viewing these posts are strangers. They might know hardly anything about their followers, or perhaps they know nothing about them at all. Along with that, the posts people put on social media are a small part of the many posts contributed by other people. When I go on Instagram, I scroll through several different posts, and most of them I barely take time to look at. Often, I just hit like and move on, and sometimes I don’t even know whose post it is. Except for my friends, my knowledge of others on social media is very surface level. I might know their names and see their posts, but I don’t know anything about them on a personal level and I’ve never had a conversation with them face to face. This reminds me of Gatsby because even though he has a lot of people at his parties, he doesn’t really know anyone and no one knows
