Up in Michigan tells the story of how Liz Coates discovers herself falling for Jim Gilmore, but when lust takes over she finds herself in an unwanted predicament. Throughout the story, Liz thoughts about Jim are conveyed as positive and overwhelming. The ending circumstance was that Jim took Liz’s feelings into play and they performed sexual intercourse. Although Liz seemed unwilling throughout the sexual relations with Jim, the text suggest that Liz might have liked what Jim did to her. Within the first three paragraphs of the story, it is revealed how Liz feels about Jim. When Jim first felt up her chest, although she mentioned that she was scared, her first thoughts was that he finally came to her. She also mentioned that although when Jim first kissed her it was painful, once she realized it was him kissing her she felt more warm and soft. When he invited her for a walk, she willingly went, even after he was making sexual advances towards her. If she did not like Jim and want to do stuff with him, then she would have declined the offer right then and there. “It was cold but Liz was hot all over from being with Jim.” (Pg.3). Her body being hot means she was sexual aroused from Jim. I feel like Liz really did want Jim, but the only thing making her stand off is that it was her first time and she was unsure how any of it worked. She was not experienced in sex and she was never educated in it, which is the only reason she was scared of Jim’s advances. Even when she was telling Jim he must not do that, that doesn’t mean imply she was serious, if she was she would of took the proper actions to get him off and away. There were chances where she could of ran away or called for help if she seriously didn’t want it but that wasn’t the case.
