Unwind written by Neal Shusterman and published in 2007, has 335 pages and is a Biopunk, Utopian and dystopian fiction. Unwind is the first book in the four book series including Unwholly, Unsouled, and Undivided also a mini book that goes along with the series Unstrung.
Connor is an independent, hasty sixteen year old. His tendency to act without intuition gives him a rough appeal additionally gets him into a considerable amount of trouble. Next Connor while on the run runs out into the middle of the highway which causes a huge crash including the car Lev and the bus Risa was on, both on the way to be unwound. Lev gets separated from Connor and Risa. Connor and Risa arrive at the Graveyard a safe haven for unwinds where they cannot be unwound. The graveyard is run by The admiral an ex admiral of the army. Roland is a troublemaker at the graveyard. Lev arrives at the graveyard toughened up. When the Admiral has a heart attack Connor, Risa, Roland, and Lev take him to the hospital knowing that they would be caught and unwound. At the hospital Roland exposes the unwinds and they are taken to Happy Jack "Harvest Camp". Roland gets unwound first. Risa is forced to be in the band that plays while unwinding goes down. Lev now a Clapper plans to clap with two others but doesn't. The detonation of the claps explode and destroys Happy Jack harvest camp. Connor loses an arm and a eye during the explosion and is unwillingly given an unwind arm and eye. The arms used to belong to Ronald who was unwound the morning before, connor knew it was Ronalds arm because of the tiger shark tattoo on it. In the book there was The Heartland War or also known as The Second Civil war which ended with the Bill of life, which satisfied both sides Pro-life and Pro-choice. The Bill stated that the human life could not be touched from the moment of conception until the child reaches the age of thirteen to eighteen, then the parents could have the option to have their child unwound. Which meant their 97% of their body would be reused for medical needs and for replacement for people in need, which they believed the unwound body never truly died.
Unwind takes place in Akron, Ohio, sometime in the future. The story makes sense to be in the future based on how advanced their medical research is, being able to transfer one person's body part to another without damaging any of the nerves or muscles memory and having full motorization of those body parts. Other than the medical advancement there was nothing else in the book that hinted the story took place in the future and not current time period.
Overall Unwind was an amazing book, i loved reading it and it was so hard to put down i was constantly into it and it kept my interest. I really liked how the story was told from different side and would jump back and forth chapter to chapter, at times it was confusing who was speaking but other than that it was really impressive. I honestly never really been into dystopian novels but Unwind really changed that for
