The article, “Unwelcome Immigrants: The labor market experiences of 1980 (Mariel) Cuban and Haitian Refugees in South Florida”, by Alejandro Portes, and Alex Stepick, gives an in depth perspective of the struggles of Cuban, and Haitian refugee who immigrated to America in 1980.

The only critique that I have about the article was the lack of personal information about the Cubans, and Haitian refugee of 1980. One of the positive things that I found in the article was that the authors implemented plenty of secondary sources, when discussing the background on how the 1980 Cubans, and Haitians were treated when they arrived in the United States, as well as the struggles that they faced in assimilating, and finding work (pg495, & 496). Another critique that I have about the article is that it is suppose to be focused on both Cubans, and Haitians of 1980, but it seems to be that the article focuses more on the Cubans immigrants of the 1980 then the Haitians. The information that is provided on the numbers of Cubans, and Haitians immigrants that arrived in 1980, and laws that the united state established, are key reason that lead to Cubans, and Haitian of the 1980 to struggle assimilating to the workplace in the United State, and the article presents this important information in great details (pg495). The article also used many statistics, and charts that break down the measurement of unemployed, employed, age, gender, education level, number of members in a household, and many more, that helps the reader better comprehend the points that the article is making (pg497, 508-509, & 511). Overall, the article was presented in a well-structured format with a background that allows the reader to get an understanding of what was happening at the time, as well as statistics, and research from others that provided an abundant amount of information. Although the article was lacking in some parts it did make up for it in the amount of information that it delivers to the
