Unteaching The Five-Paragraph Essay

In the article “Unteaching the Five-Paragraph Essay” Foley Marie argues that the five-paragraph essay “deters thinking” (pg.233). According to “Instead of generating thinking, the formula deters it” (pg. 231) the passage analyze that the five-paragraph essay makes students lacks of creativity, and stops to let students explore themselves. The reason for five-paragraph essay still taught in school is because of High School English classes are overcrowded so it would be easier to teach a class the five-paragraph essay. According to “professional writers do not use it” (pg.232) the author gives support that the five-paragraph essay will not help students for college in writing, because professional writer do not use it. When I was in high school, English class require us to write in five-paragraph formula that must had an introduction, three body paragraph, and a conclusion. I thought it is easier if I just follow the requirement and I can easily finish an essay it seems easy, but it takes me a lots of time to pick only three ideas to put into my papers. And sometimes is the opposite situation, I don’t have three ideas to put into my essay, so I need to make up ideas or use other ideas than I don’t even know, but I still have to use it to fulfill the requirement. So all I do when I’m writing a five-paragraph essay is only focus on the structure, how to fulfill the requirement, not on what I want to express in my papers. But after reading the article, author shows me how the five paragraph essay is useless and is not helping students to explore new information, so we just write what we know. When we require to write only three ideas, we won’t to do research on ideas, because it will need extra work, so the five-paragraph formula is limiting writers to express their ideas in only three-body paragraph. And I also realize that in five paragraph essay it is hard to make a smooth transition. So the connection is sometimes
