Unstructured Risk Model

In the study done by Phenix and Sreenivasan (2009) they reviewed risk models as applied to mentally retarded sex offenders who are under sexually violent predator (SVP) or sexually dangerous person (SDP) civil commitment evaluations. They used a conceptual model for sexual offender recidivism risk when dealing with those who are considered to have an intellectual disorder (ID) which they have deficits for example, social skills deficits for example masturbating in public and impulsivity rather than being sexually deviant.(2009). Griffin and Vettor (2012) defined intellectual disability as “people who, prior to the age of 18, had impaired adaptive, social and cognitive functioning with an Intelligence Quotient (IQ) of less than 70” (p. 64). Release factors include such things as lack of mandated supervision and unstructured environment, whereas behavioral tendencies such as low self-esteem, lack of assertiveness, poor impulse control linked to sexual acting out (Phenix & Sreenivasan, 2009). Treatment progress factors such as treatment dropout, poor response to treatment, and cognitive distortions are present, whereas social skills deficits such as targeting lower functioning peers for sex, inability to form peer sexual relationships, and difficult in internalizing social expectations (Phenix & Sreenivasan, 2009). Diagnosis factors include antisocial history, sex offenses occurred under supervision, comorbid psychiatric disturbance, having a high score in the PCL-R tool whereas global risk factors such as having offenses that involved violence, target population is young children, and there are multiple victim types (Phenix & Sreenivasan, 2009).
