Unproductive Drug Addicts

Decent Essays
Another view on drugs is that if drugs were legalized there would be an increase in the amount of drug addicts and that crime related to drugs would not end. There would be an increase in drug addicts because the drugs that are now illegal would be more assessable and would decrease in price. As a result there would be an increase on welfare costs and an increase in unproductive citizens. Increasing the amount of drug addicts increases the amount we spend on welfare because drug addicts typically do not have a stable job making them unproductive members of society. For instance if we make drugs legal drug addicts will not all of a sudden become productive citizens of society. Not only will legalizing drugs not decrease the amount of unproductive

Out of three reasons, I agree with one of the appeals and disagree with two appeals. I agree that there will be no more drug dealer because after drug being free and legalize because there will be no work for pushers. For example, Pushers would have contacted with lots of people who are addicted to drug and those people would come to pushers and buy the drugs from them. Now, since the drugs are free and legalize, pusher will lose the people whom they have had contact with because they will not come to them and buy the drugs since it is free. Secondly, I disagree with the second appeal which says “the mob will lose the main source of its income” because for them drugs are not only the work they do.…

The government is only enforcing the use of drugs by making it harder for people to live comfortably in America. I think that if the government spent less time focusing on criminalizing every minority they see on the street, and spent more time focusing on how they can help minorities get by in the American system. If the government is so worried about drugs in America then they should help to monitor the use of drugs instead of prohibit them. While the government monitors drug use in America, they can spend the time coming up with a solution to help the common American live a more reasonable lifestyle. A way that the America could help monitor drug use, and keep it off the streets, is to have some sort of establishment where people can go be around other people doing the same thing.…

The War on Drugs has had negative consequences on people and has not been very effective. Joel Miller in his book Bad Trip: How The War Against Drugs Is Destroying America outlines several of the negative consequences of the War on Drugs and I will discuss some of them. One of Millers biggest arguments that lay’s a foundation for his book is that he believe making drugs illegal and criminalizing them creates the circumstances for crime and violence (Miller 1). While the government approaches drugs as though they themselves are the cause of crime and violence, Miller says this is wrong because just by making something illegal does not mean you eradicate the demand for it. An illegal market will arise for the illegal substance and without the…

If we shift drug use from being a public enemy to a public health issue and emphasizing treatment rather than punishment, drugs will be destigmatized leading to users being much more inclined to seek treatment, drugs will become less taboo and exciting to possible users, profits from the drug industry will decrease, incarceration rates will decrease, and racial disparity will be reduced all at a much lesser cost than the current plan. Many countries have done this and they have succeeded, like Portugal, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic. Drug use and overdoses have gone down greatly in those countries. Not only is decriminalization proven to be more effective than the policies currently in place, the billions we waste on this ineffective system will finally get put to good use and go to tried-and-true methods. All the evidence points to decriminalization being the answer- in order to bring justice to black americans, improve the nation’s public health, and actually reduce drug abuse and crime for good, we need to reform our approach for a better…

What should be allowed in America? Drugs have become very big items these days, either being used for medical reasons or just for fun, they are extremely common. As known, most drugs are illegal; however, people have connections to others to be able to get these illegal drugs to play around with and get high off of. Although, individuals with diseases or illnesses may benefit from illegal drugs to counteract the effects of their sickness, so the questions then comes up- should drug sales and usage be legalized? In the article “Drug Policy and the Intellectuals” by William J. Bennett, he plays off both sides whether or not drugs should be legalized.…

This currently costs nine billion dollars alone. Although some inmates may be serving time for more severe drug related crimes, legalizing small amounts of drugs would lower the amount of money spent by the government to incarcerate them. Another option in legalization could be to allow the possession and sale of drugs, but in a highly regulated manner. Allowing small amounts of some drugs to be purchased, but with taxes or by government authorized sellers would allow for drug users to purchase what they need safely without potentially harming others in attempts to obtain drugs. Regulating the amount dispensed could save lives by preventing overdoses, and insure that the drugs purchased are safe to use.…

The type of offender that would be affected by my change in criminal justice policy would be nonviolent drug offenders. It's important to note that the nonviolent drug offenders would only be drug users, not dealers. The proposed policy decriminalizes drug use and instead would impose fines and a probationary period for violators. By decriminalizing drug use, real change may occur. Instead of throwing addicts in jail, there will be a greater emphasis on rehabilitation.…

The drug market is stronger than ever, yet the drug war has been in full force for several decades. The effects here in the United States, are quite similar to the effects internationally, but there are many solutions other than a drug war, to stop the use of drugs. Nobel laureate and economist Milton Friedman remarked on the issue, “However much harm drugs do to those who use them…seeking to prohibit their use does even more harm both to users of drugs and to the rest of us…Legalizing drugs would simultaneously reduce the amount of crime and improve law enforcement. It is hard to conceive of any other single measure that would accomplish so much to promote law and order” (Donohue 146). Friedman is right.…
