Eighty-eight percent of cellphone users claim they could not go a single day without their device, according to Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Study conducted in 2012. Roughly nine in ten Americans own some type of cellular device. Sadly, these statistics prove the technology addiction sweeping the United States. Although technology is useful and convenient, it should be consumed in moderation, as with all things. Unplugging from social media regularly will improve all areas of the health triangle - mental/emotional health, social health, and physical health.
Some say unplugging from social media kicks you out of the loop and leaves you uninformed; true, but false at the same time. For example, unplugging gives you the opportunity

In fact, Brent Seal, a mental health speaker and Huffington Post contributor, came up with three ways technology is affecting the mental health of its users - speed of change, isolation, and internet addiction. Seal says in his article, 3 Ways Technology Is Messing With Our Mental Health, that the only thing constant in our world is change, and that modern technology is increasing the speed of this change. In our ever-changing environment, we would tend to think that technology would make work easier, when in fact, it is making us work harder. We cannot go one weekend without dealing with work or school related e-mails. Consequently, technology obsession is creating a more chaotic and stressful lifestyle for all people, leading to isolation. We are connected to everyone around us, but altogether disconnected simultaneously. How many times have you called someone over the phone, or written a letter to a friend across the country in the past year? When you go out to eat, do you spend most of the time looking down at your phone? It seems strange to think about all the people we haven’t met due to our technology infatuation. We build a box around ourselves using our devices, and the walls aren’t closing in, yet. The isolation we create for ourselves causes depression, anxiety, and decreased independence. All in all, technology is causing us to isolate ourselves from the people around us, and the only way to stop this revolution is to power off the phone and take time to break the cycle of technology
