Unplugged For 24 Hours

Improved Essays
On Friday the 16th of October I went unplugged for 24 hours, and found it surprisingly uneventful. I had one minor slip up where I started looking at a phone because I was talking to a person who was getting the proper spelling for words off his phone. Other than that I did not notice a difference from my normal life. For the most part, I spend my time talking to people in person so that is what I did well unplugged. The biggest challenge was making sure I had my school work done before hand because everything has to be turned in online. However, a little planning took care of this issue. I can see why it would be difficult for some people. Everyday people use their phones, TV, and computer for everything from entertainment to information.

After I read the article “The 7 Day Digital Diet” I believe it’s a good idea. Everyone is need to take a break from technology and explore the outside world. There are many things one can do without electronics and heaven forbid if there is a black out at least you can fall back on other hobbies. Which was the part I liked the most about the article, FOMO; the fear of missing out in the world, because it’s very true.…

Skills that are needed to take care of ourselves are diminishing. Reliance on high-tech gadgets allow people to get the answer without the necessary skills needed to get it. GPS, medical monitors and cell phones all contribute to the important skills diminishing. First, with GPS devices we no longer need to learn how to navigate or read a map. All you need is the address or coordinates for where you want to go and the GPS can give you directions and in some cases even navigate you, turn to turn.…

Many people think it's a bad to have a day of unplugging, but it really isn’t. To me it’s a good thing for a two reasons. That people don’t have a off switch to what they do and there are things you can from it. My first reason is that many people don’t know when they are on the internet to much.…

In the article entitled “The Pointlessness of Unplugging,” Casey N. Cep disputes the Impracticality of “unplugging” from technology, using “the fifth annual National Day of Unplugging,” as the focal point of his argument. Cep begins by analyzing a website that participant’s submitted photos to of themselves holding signs with explanations of why they chose to unplug. Ceps continues by saying “How quickly the digital age turned into the age of technological anxiety” (Cep, 2014, para. 3). Which tells the reader his opinion that everyone has become so anxious because of the pace technology has progressed. I am barely doing any preparation before disconnecting because I think I can experience how much I am truly reliant on technology. I have asked my mom to wake me up for school so I don't have to use an alarm, I have asked my family to not turn on the radio and I have already done all of the digital projects i need the night before. I think the easiest part of this will be abstaining from television because I don’t think I watch too much television normally so I don't think this will be a big change.…

In recent years, technology has become a necessity for most modern humans. Some people cannot even go a day without using their phone or computer; however, very few take the time to understand how the technology they use actually functions. Roxanne Emadi was quoted by the New York Times when she said, “Kids these days are all stuck on their phones, their tablets, and are constantly using technology, but few of them are learning how to create it”. (2) It might be hard to believe, but programming is used in almost every occupation and device in the world. Even farmers use programming in their jobs.…
