Following McIntosh's work, unpack your knapsack. The privileges that I take for granted daily is being a woman and being Hispanic. Here in the US, there are so many Spanish people, that a lot of job sites are now looking for a Spanish speaking individual. I would say that Spanish is the 2nd important language to know besides the 1st, which is English. I take being Hispanic has a privilege because a lot of people take classes to learn how to speak it, but I was given that advantage and was born by Latin American parents. I grew up with them talking to me in Spanish, so I can understand and speak it fluently. Now a day, you would be surprised with who can speak and understand Spanish. For example, my boyfriend who is Caucasian and Greek, didn’t have to take classes, he learned by his co-worker talking, he’s been working with them for 8 years now. …show more content…

Ways in which I have seen social, economic, political, and / or cultural apartheids in my community is where I live. Where I live, I am surround by “rich/middle class” people and right in the middle is where my small community is placed, and in my neighborhood, it’s a minority of black people and there’s only 3 Hispanic families, including my family. When a spot gets open for rent and a white family comes to look around, they don’t end up taking up the home. Many times, I believe they don’t because of the social

After reading the poem “Legal Alien” by Pat Mora I feel I can relate to her point of view with being bi-lingual and b-cultural. There are definitely more advantages than disadvantages when knowing more than one language. Being bi-lingual brings a lot of proud and respect from others like us (bi-lingual) and from ourselves too. When she talks about being Mexican, I can’t really relate to her because where I’m from, my country really support and admire bi-lingual. I do have friends who are ashamed and embarrassed to admit they know both languages, and honestly I feel embarrassed for them because knowing more than one language is such a privilege.…

Categorizing and identifying threat is part human defense mechanism which allowed humans to survive nature and evolve into the modern man. Identifying threat in nature allowed for better survival and by categorizing animals into dangerous or safe further improves the chances of survival. Unfortunately, this defense mechanism of categorizing and identifying threat in the modern world has shifted from animals to other humans. Describing someone based on their appearance is normal and it facilitates the recognition of that individual, but racism also developed due to natural tendency of humans categorizing subjects. In America, the land in which everyone is created equal, there is a clear evidence that equality between races may just be an ideology…

The importance of understanding privilege and oppression cannot be emphasized enough for those of us in the helping profession. There are so many factors to consider, especially if one plans to work with diverse populations. Author Ryde (2009) describes how "we might, at least for a time, transcend cultural difference [but it is also] important to keep in mind the different worlds we enter when the session ends" (p. 44). The therapist and client of different backgrounds will separate and go back to their lives, which are often very unalike. Perhaps the clients ' financial situations differ vastly from that therapist 's, or their racial identities offer far fewer opportunities than the practitioner 's racial identity offers her.…
