I am honored to receive an award named after an individual who was himself an activist. Before I get into my involvement and the reason why I received this award, I want to share my story. I was born in a small town located in central Mexico. My family was struggling financially and in 2003 they decided to immigrate to the United States. I was 3 years old when I crossed the border with my mother and we were lucky to make it. I remember absolutely nothing about my homeland, so I grew up with no clue that I was an undocumented immigrant. Even when I found out that I was undocumented I didn’t understand what that meant. Being an undocumented student is a challenge. Our opportunities are limited because of our status. To be honest, at the start …show more content…
The thing that would have opened so many doors for me was removed and I thought that was it. That was the end of my dreams. I was devastated and tired. I had two options, go back to hiding in the shadows or fight for my right to stay in this country. I decided to go for the second option. So, I started attending actions and when junior year started I began attending the Youth Empowered in the Struggle meetings. Y.E.S. had a tremendous impact in my life. It helped me understand the power of my voice, of my story. Throughout my junior year, my Riverside Y.E.S. chapter has participated in several actions to fight for a CLEAN Dream ACT, one that does not throw our parents under the bus. Our first major action as a chapter was the March 5th rally in Racine. We were the smallest group, but the loudest. With elections coming up, I hope to empower young people to go out and vote because change needs to happen. This award belongs to my whole Y.E.S chapter, every single one of us put our heart and soul into our work. Finally, I want to thank the teachers who nominated me and a huge thanks to St. Benedict for facilitating this award, thank

While reading Jose Vargas “My Life as an Undocumented Immigrant”, it reminded me a lot of my parents, and helped me realize that immigrants from different countries have similar struggles. On page 1 of the piece, she says, “My mother wanted to give me a better life, so she sent me thousands of miles away to live with her parents in America- my grandfather and grandmother. ” It wasn’t easy for my parents to get out of Iran. In terms of travel freedom, Iran’s passport is one of the worst for entering another country without a visa, in part because of the Islamic Republics links with terrorism.…

In America most people are composed of diverse nationalities. Each person has a story behind their eyes, such as how they got to the United States and where they came from. If someone were to guess my specific nationality based off my generic name and pale skin color, most likely the guess would be Irish or Norwegian. In reality, my nationality is from all over, my closest and most recent ancestor from Italy. America is a country entirely based off immigrants, which means everyone has a different origin and backstory.…

About half of the students, according to the survey expressed “they’ve received mistreated by other students because of legal status, and many also said they experienced negate or unfair treatment from college representatives.” To recapitulate these students should be given full acknowledgement and recognition for their diligence and hard-work. Illegal immigration in the United States is currently a very hot topic. Many people have strong opinions for and against allowing undocumented immigrants to be educated, find jobs, and even live in the United States. Some Americans argue that undocumented immigrants will take jobs meant for legal citizens, or financially burden the country. People in support of the opposing argument believe that undocumented immigrants deserve a chance to become educated and earn a living in America because they do not have the opportunities to do these things in their home countries. I believe that undocumented immigrants deserve to be given the same opportunities as documented citizens because every human deserves freedom.…

I looked in my mother's brown eyes and found no trace of tears shed. This was not her first experience of saying goodbye to a family member. I am an undocumented student— there are many opportunities that I can’t obtain because of my residential status. My parents brought me to this country for better education and a better quality of life and I thank them everyday. I value all these sacrifices my parents have done for my siblings and me. After I get out of school and during summer I help my dad with his work and sometimes they’re unpleasant jobs.…

My feelings towards homosexual men is parallel to that of homosexual women; in that they are inspiring and make me feel experienced. I may not feel as comfortable with them due to not be as exposed to this microculture, but men have fought resiliently, to be open about their sexuality and that is nothing to appear as negative because they are not judging people, so why should they be judged. Jesus has open arms for all his children and we should have open arms for all our brothers and sisters. Not once have I met a disabled person who has judged me for being white, blonde, brown, or blue eyed. Disabled people are probably one of the most grateful people you will ever encounter thus they make me feel grateful and likewise unworthy.…
