Identification of Unknown Bacterium #8 Report.
Aim: The objective of this report is to identify the unknown bacteria by completing different tests. The test includes things such as a Nutrient agar plate, MacConkey’s agar plate, Gram staining, Oxidase test, UTI ID Membrane, and Eosin Ethylene Blue Agar. Materials: Testing Unknown Bacteria #8 Materials: 1. Nutrient Agar Plate (NA) 9. Hydrogen Peroxide - 2 g/ml. MacConkey’s Agar Plate (MAC) 10. UTI filter 3. Eosin Methylene Blue Agar Plate (EMB) 11. Petri plate 4. Unknown Bacteria #8 - 12. Forceps 5. Bunsen Burner - 13" Timer 6. Inoculating loop 7. Gloves 8. Oxidase test strip

Proteus Mirabilis is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium. It is commonly found in water, soil and fecal matter. Proteus mirabilis is a bacterium that causes urinary tract infections, stemming from cystitis, pyelonephritis, and possibly prostatitis, it can also cause wound infections and pneumonia. Most cases of UTI infections caused by proteus mirabilis are caused by catheters placed in long-term hospitalized patients. Treatment for proteus mirabilis depends on the severity. For hospitalized patients, antibiotics can be given through an IV so that it gets right into the veins and then followed up with oral antibiotics for 14 days. For less severe cases, treatment is just oral antibiotics for 10-21 days. Avoidance of proteus mirabilis is done by using only sterile medical equipment and only using catheters when absolutely …show more content…
Tests include gram-staining, MAC agar plates, NA agar plates, oxidase test, UTI ID Membrane, and EMB agar plates. The results of these tests lead us to the conclusion that unknown bacteria #8 was Proteus Mirabilis using the bacteria flow chart. One thing to note, is that although this bacterium is one that causes UTIs, looking at the results (figure 5), it can be seen that it was negative for UTI ID membrane. This can be due to the fact that this form of UTI testing is not a common test for UTI bacteria. Testing for UTI is done by urine analysis and not from bacteria grown on an NA plate. Something that can be further improved in future labs is for the UTI ID Membrane test to be tested in more detail. With the result of the test being negative, but knowing that proteus mirabilis is a bacterium that does cause UTIs in some cases. A professional application can be done as a medical professional who is testing to find out what bacterium is causing an infection in a patient. Doing so, we can perform proper treatment to get the patient back to normal before other complications
