This protocol is used following return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) in some patients. Many patients following cardiac arrest suffer from some long term neurological dysfunction (Mathiesen et al. 2015). Research has shown therapeutic hypothermia to decrease this outcome in some patients. The type of arrest, or the rhythm the patient was in is also an important factor to the success of the hypothermia treatment. Patients who suffered an arrest with ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia had about a 50% chance of little to no neurological dysfunction following the hypothermia treatment (2015). Patients who suffered an arrest with pulseless electrical activity or asystole showed little to no success following hypothermia treatment.
There are some exclusion and inclusion criteria to be able to use this protocol. Some exclusions are pregnancy, younger than 18 years of age, inability maintain blood pressure without drips prior to cardiac arrest, cardiac arrest lasting longer than 2 hours, previous terminal condition, drug overdose induced arrest, and life threatening coagulation issues. Some criteria that must be met to use this protocol includes ROSC, comatose or neurologically unresponsive, ability to maintain blood pressure and remain hemodynamically
