1. Describe what you see as the role of the University of Hawai'i (UH) locally, nationally, globally. (300 words)
The University of Hawaiʻi has the envious role of providing education in an exceptionally multi-cultural environment. We are preparing our students as students and leaders to help develop the knowledge necessary to advance the goals of a democratic participatory society.
As one of a very small number of universities in the region, UH is uniquely well positioned to serve an area that is under-studied and under-served. Oceania is rapidly changing and as the premier research university system in the region, we are well suited for guiding this change in a culturally-aware and appropriate way. Our system host several truly unique sites of research and provides opportunities for education that are not available anywhere else in the world. We are ideally positioned to see global change brought about by the work being done on our campuses.
We have a responsibility to provide our students and the wider community with the tools they need to be successful in furthering their academic goals. Our students today have access to a variety of technology that can positively enhance every area of their academic journey. We must ensure that we are using these tools optimally to prepare our students for the world that they are entering today and the world of tomorrow that the will help …show more content…
I however recognise that fully gaining consensus is not alway possible, so a good leader should not being afraid to make a decision when called upon to do so. As leaders we should be working to bring about transformative change within our organization. We should be challenging and inspiring our teams. It is important to surround ourselves with high energy passionate people who are experts in their area. It is not possible to be an expert in every area, we must have faith in our teams’ skills and knowledge so as to allow them to excel. Together, we can build a strong ethical climate in which our teams are able to transcend their self interests to cooperate in building towards the common
