My Journey
Some of the university of Dubuque alumni stories are very similar and some are very different to my story. Many stories involved kids going to segregated schools. I grew up and went to a mostly white high school. I did not have to deal with a lot of racism in my life, because I come from a bi-racial family. Second, I didn't have the experience when you don't get along with your roommate. My roommate and I get along very well. Third, I am not a military kid. I never moved around a lot when I was growing up. Fourth, I did not come on a wing and a prayer.
Some aspects of the stories were similar. The story I can relate to the most is Temwa Phiri. I got a postcard from UD and that is when I seriously looked into the school. I was

I have always been independent, but I fully seeked independence when I was 16 years old. This was the year of 2016, and this was the year that my life changed; I was forced to grow up and learn how to be more independent. The first step to my seeking of independence was turning 16 years old and getting my driver’s license. This meant I was finally able to go out on my own and not rely on others to take me places anymore. In the year of 2016, I also began taking classes at Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute to earn college credits.…

The view from the top of Vernon Hill, a low-income neighborhood in Worcester, MA, is reflective of both of my lineage and my current identity with aspirational career goals. It is also the scene in the opening paragraph of my book that connects my family history with my professional ambitions. My personal story inspires my academic hopes of becoming a lawyer who fights for the underprivileged and helps create access to educational opportunities for them. As Irish immigrants with limited money and no education, my great-grandparents moved to a three-decker house on Vernon Hill.…

As a first time student attending Spokane Falls Community College, I honestly thought that the only buildings and areas of campus involving my class schedule would be of importance. Little did I know that one room I would encounter would become my safe haven. I remember the first day stepping out onto campus and all I saw was a giant riddle waiting to be solved so many parking spaces, buildings, rooms, classes, and students. The anticipation bubbling up inside of me was exciting and rooted with a little nervousness. I was searching for place to keep me focused on my goal of being a successful student, a place to refresh between rigorous lectures.…

As the semester comes to a conclusion, so far I have been very satisfied with my performance thus far here at Slippery Rock University. Being in college has really given me the opportunity to meet so many new people that have been able to positively impact in such a big way. May it be through helping me study for exams or just a great group of friends that I can go hang out with. Don’t get me wrong there most definitely has been some rocky moments here and there but I feel that I really pushed through those moments and have made the best out of them.…

Basketball has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up around the sport with my Grandpa being a referee and playing little league ball through elementary school. In High-School being six foot six inches it was a given I would play basketball. I spent three years on the varsity basketball team with having the privilege of being a Captain my senior year. When I was accepted to Michigan State University it was hands down the easiest decision to come here.…

On a sweltering summer day in the City of Atlanta or the “ATL” as it is affectionately known today, I visited my best friend while he visited his father for the summer. That day I remember vividly because as soon as we stepped outside of the airport to take the “MARTA” train, I began to sweat profusely. Anyone that has been to Atlanta during the summer knows it is incredibly humid there. A week earlier I had seen my friend, and we planned out what we were going to do that week I visited. I knew I wanted to visit Spellman College, Morehouse College, Clark Atlanta University, and Morris Brown College, but before I could visit the Atlanta University Center or the “AUC” as it is called to the locals, I felt compelled to visit the grave site of one of the most influential human being to walk this earth.…

For the last two years, I have had the opportunity to call UIC home, during my first year in college I attended Indiana Institution of Technology at Fort Wayne. Transferring in was a huge adjustment, I had just come from a school where I was the only African-American female in the majority if not in all of my classes. I felt as if I was I was isolated in an environment I wanted to call home. Coming to UIC was the best decision I made throughout my collegiate career, UIC not only offered my major, allowed me to be in a diverse environment, is in an environment that I am familiar with, but it also pushed academic excellence and ensuring their students have jobs once they graduated. Through the duration of my collegiate career, I have always been…

During my orientation my optimism about attending a predominantly white institution dropped. I had the biggest cultural shock of my life. When I looked around the room at the other students I seen no one who looked like me or seemed to come from the same background as me. I cried that day and I wanted to leave and never come back. My mother tried her best to assure me that Miami University choose me because they seen something in me.…

As we approach the ending of the 1st semester at Concordia College, I realized how many things in my life has changed. I am about to finish my first semester as a college student, I have met many new people that I have established close ties with, and I have become adjusted to living on my own without my parents. All of these things I wouldn’t have been able to succeed in at this time last year. Since Concordia College is a very small school, it was easy to connect with people that you see every day. If I was at a bigger school I don’t believe I would have been able to adapt as quickly.…

We had been utterly consumed by the project for the past two months and the fear of creating something that wasn’t good enough was constantly weighing on me. In my civil engineering and architecture class the teacher assigned a project that was a design competition for the American Institute of Architects (AIA).…

This post is going to be completely off topic, it has nothing to do with college basketball. An incident occurred on a SUNY Albany bus in which students were physically attacked, and called racial slurs by fellow students. I was going to wait until the video was released to say my piece, but since the story has now hit cnn.com, and UAlbany held a rally Monday evening I figured I 'd give my two cents right now. If you don 't know what incident I 'm talking about than you can read about it HERE What I 'm going to say may not be popular, but it needs to be heard. People can suck, regardless of their race or religion.…
