University Of Chicago Speech

Hello University of Chicago reader. I appreciate the time you all at the admissions office have taken to reach out to kids like me. To be honest, I’m writing this during the gaudy presentation my school hosts for cap and gown, run by an independent company. Flashes of jewelry imprinted with a metal number 18 on it are gracing the screen on the auditorium stage, and the cloaked (metaphorically) salesman speaks of the beauty of the rings bonding with the importance of remembering the past. The opportunities that I’ve had in high school, along with the community I’ve been in, are important to me, but I doubt buying a 3000$ ruby ring with ‘CDS’ carved into it would assist me in learning from my four years of experience. As warped words flow through a state-of-the-art-in-2006 sound system, I can’t help but look to the future. …show more content…
I’ve lived in a suburb area of Chandler since I was born, and my schools have all been within 5 minutes of me. It takes about 25 minutes to get to downtown, and even then, there’s not much for me to do as even a high schooler. University of Chicago, to me, represents the birth of a new experience for me. The city atmosphere, as advertised extensively in the promotional material, is entirely diverse and different for me, and I’d love to envelop myself in the smells, textures and images of Chicago. Also important for me is the diversity of culture; from the tiny “The Life of the Mind” book that I got in the mail, I saw all the majors, all the houses, all the clubs, and since then they’ve been swirling around in my head. I need options wherever I’m going because I have a lot of interests and I don’t feel comfortable tying myself down to one major before I’ve even tried it in

The Pope expressed that they are all God-fearing people and that they are among the chosen ones. He basically told them that the land that is being invaded was for them. He also expressed to them that Jerusalem was being over ran by people that did not believe. He painted a picture so vividly that the people felt compelled to run to their aid. He also used their ancestors as leverage by telling them to do the deeds of their ancestors and reclaim what was theirs and stated that it was the will of God.…

In Glenn Loury’s speech, “Is He One of Us? Reflections on Identity and Authenticity” (pp. 489-493), he delivers the 245th Opening Convocation to the students of Brown University. Loury addresses diversity, what role it plays, and the advantages it can bring to people’s lives. His supporting statements are puzzling and his justification falls short of being a well thought-out speech, as one might expect at an Opening Convocation. As his speech progresses, his direction becomes unclear with each new point he brings up.…

From the beginning of recorded history, speeches have a tendency to be influential as they connect with their audience and illicit a specific thought or emotion. Continuing this custom, writer David Foster Wallace delivered his compelling commencement speech aptly titled, “Commencement Speech,” to an audience of students at Kenyon College in 2005. His purpose is to make the audience aware of our ‘default-setting’ of thinking. His ability to connect with his audience via word choice and the examples of everyday life he provides, proves his speech to be effective.…

On May 27, 2015, I at last finished a four year in the making milestone in my life; high school. Walking upon the center stage, hearing your name being called and receiving your diploma while shaking the hands of the many faces you either grew to love or despise is a memory forever engraved into graduate’s minds. That diploma that took blood, sweat and tears to finally obtain may have been, for many seniors, their most cherished possession to date; except for me. I would see much of my friends plaster that sheet of decorative, colorful paper on their living room wall, while mine is collecting dust as a base for a gift that means more than those four years of sleepless nights and crammed studying. Following graduation, my grandfather, who traveled more than eight hundred miles from California to watch me cross the stage, gave me an heirloom that had experienced more than fifty years of its own history.…

Language is one of the oldest ways of communication that has brought humans together. Dating back to Tamil, a language 5000 years ago, to what most of the world uses today: English. So in my opinion everyone who lives here should be able to understand the English language right?…
