University Medical Center is the largest public hospital located on the U.S./Mexico border. El Paso is located in West Texas in the Chihuahuan Desert along the Rio Grande. Immigration is a key factor due to El Paso’s proximity to Mexico impacting not only the city but the hospital as well. University Medical Center is the only non-profit hospital in El Paso. In the 1950s, the residents of El Paso voted to create the El Paso County Hospital District. By doing this the residents agreed that part of their taxes would be designated to ensure that the healthcare services provided by this hospital would be of top quality. In 2011, University Medical Center became the first and only hospital in the region to become a Level 1 Trauma Center and Emergency Department. University Medical Center is accredited by the Joint Commission, it is a 396 bed facility and is the only teaching hospital in the region.
