The theme for “Catch the Moon” is universal. This theme is universal because it shows that someone is trying to change for the better, the power of love, and how love can change people. This story is about Luis. Luis is a reckless, uncaring young boy, but he slowly changes for the better because he finds love. He copes with the grief of his mother’s death, and does not know how to deal with it, which is why he is known for being disruptive all the time. He starts to realize things for himself and sees things with a different perspective. He realizes what the value of family and love means.
As explained before, it shows that Luis is a troublemaker. He’s rude and disrespectful, and does not care about anything. Luis seems like a bad kid. However, that won’t be the case anymore once he meets Naomi. Naomi reminds Luis of his mother. She lives in a funeral home, which makes Luis think of his mother’s death. “She wasn’t perfect or anything. She had bad days when nothing could make her smile, especially after she got sick. But he never heard her say a negative thing about anyone” (Cofer 239). Here we find that Luis is not as ruthless as he seems. He just has a hard time coping with the grief, but he really isn’t like that. He’s actually a good person.

He was apparently doing this out of love for Naomi. After meeting Naomi, Luis felt like he was in love, especially when Naomi reminded him of his mother. That was the starting point of him changing into a better
