Unity is important within a community, especially when facing hardships. Publilius Syrus once said, “Where there is unity there is always victory.” It is wise to stay together and share a common opinion in a large group of people, however, that can be difficult to maintain for a long period of time. Change can alter the mindsets of certain individuals. By seeing different aspects of the world, people tend to find a sense of individuality. Many also start to form their own opinions that can interfere with the thoughts of a group, causing a conflict. In his novel, Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe expresses through the symbolic death of Nwoye and Okonkwo’s suicide that unity and support is necessary in a community for it to become successful. Nwoye becoming Isaac is due to encouragement he did not receive from his father. This leads to the downfall of the Igbo community. Throughout Umuofia, Okonkwo is tough, powerful, and manly. He aspires to raise a son who will follow in his footsteps. Okonkwo wanted Nwoye “to grow into a tough young man capable of ruling his father’s household when he was dead and gone” (52). In order for a society to flourish, it is important that each individual feels supported in that environment. This is essential beyond the novel because it is critical to have a support system. Many people tend to look for supportive friends or groups when faced with hardships. It is human nature to open up to people who are comforting and supportive. Individuals want to be around others who do not judge their opinions and instead tell them to embrace their opinions. Unity is formed by support, having encouragement allows individuals to remain within their community rather than drifting
