“Unity in diversity”. This is written in the Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, or the national motto of Indonesia. Uniting Indonesians with vast diverse backgrounds, religions and ethnicities is the goal of Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (also known as Ahok). He was the first double minority Vice Governor (Christian and Chinese-Indonesian) when he was the running mate of then Joko Widodo when they ran in the 2011 elections for Governor of Jakarta. Ahok eventually became Governor when Joko Widodo was elected to become president in 2014. This was a controversial decision. Major governmental positions since post-colonial Indonesia have always been characterized as unstable. This was due to the conflicting ideologies in the country between the Muslims (the majority)

His main incentive to do so was because Gerindra believed that reigonal leaders should have been picked by the parliament instead of the people. Ahok disagreed, thinking that the Indonesians deserved to vote for their leader. His disagreeent lead to him leaving Gerindra and thus being an independent candidate. This prompted a group of individuals to start a movement, now known as the NGO Teman Ahok to collect one million identity cards to allow him to run as an independent candidate, something that was required by the Indonesian law as he did not have a political party. He then received endorsements from five political parties, including the Golkar and PDIP, two of Indonesia’s biggest political parties. The influence of NGO’s the result of globalization and global governance, or the aim of transnational non state actors to negotiate responses through soft power to influence views and thoughts and is seen through liberal institutionalism - in this case Teman Ahok. Although Indonesia’s political development has changed, many still believe that Indonesia’s is still filled with instability and corruption that remains from the past. As a Global Politics student, however, I wanted to see how effective NGO’s such as Teman Ahok would help change the old, corrupt system built by the wealthy in Indonesia. Many women that were previously blinded by the political system in Indonesia are now seeing the light through videos and pamphlets made by Teman Ahok. It creates a greater incentive for mothers and the younger generation. According to Teman Ahok statistics analyzing voting and social media, women's participation by 40%. More women are now inclined to vote Now her family completely supports Ahok as his intentions are more clear compared to past candidates. Teman Ahok has helped improve human rights by allowing more voters’s voices to be heard as well, through the Berita Ahok App that allows voters to write their questions and concerns. Ibu Ester herself says that even though she is a native Indonesian, Ahok is not a candidate that will succumb to government pressures which will create less bias in the Indonesian
