Furthermore, one way to expand regulation involves potentially follow other regulations on electronic cigarettes that already exist. One way to develop regulation consists of following many state laws already put into action. For example, Hawaii was the first state to raise the smoking age to 21. The state decided to do this when students using electronic cigarettes quadrupled over four years to 22% and middle school to 12% in 2015. Hawaii’s military base supports the new law. Although some argue that if a man or woman is old enough to fight for our country, they are old enough to decide about smoking. While some might agree, this law ultimately protects high school students from corruption of electronic cigarettes. The first three months of this new law involved educating the public of the new law, and handing out warning instead of fines (Bussewitz). Many supporters believe electronic cigarettes are less dangerous and hazardous than regular cigarettes (Khan A.10; Fairchild). Likewise, electronic cigarettes are not completely risk free, but cause a fraction of the harm as traditional cigarettes (Berwick). Although other supporters claim less toxic effects, evidence proves they still produce dangerous health risks (Natanson and Lovett). Supporters claim e-cigarettes provide a safer alternative; however, evidence proves the negative health effects. Thus, their reasoning fails. As well as that, supporters claim switching from electronic cigarettes will cost more in the beginning, but will ultimately save money in the long run (Friedman). It is also a cheap way to reduce smoking (Berwick). Regardless of the cost, is it really worth the risk of putting toxins in the body from an unknown product, when no one realizes the long-term
