Government is a system of legislators that act on the part of the people, to actively promote a healthy and interactive community - or at least that is what the concept of government was originally. However, government has evolved through those who control it, and oftentimes the role of the government in civilian life is viewed negatively by the governed. Those governed do not always agree with how the system is run, which has created friction between the two parties. Acts of rebellion are often violent, but peaceful protests also are led in order to bring attention to issues, and enact change. “On the Duty of Civil Disobedience”, an essay by Henry David Thoreau, expresses his thoughts on the government and how citizens should respond to governmental issues.…

The government plays a role in certain aspects of our everyday lives. Americans greatly benefit from social welfare, which is the social services provided by a state or by a private organization. One of the reasons the U. S. Constitution was set up was to promote the general welfare of the people according to the Preamble. While this does not necessarily mean that everything the people need is the government's responsibility, it is the role of the government to protect the social welfare of its citizens. Our policies today regarding social welfare stem from what happened during the Progressive Era.…

The duty of the American government is to provide for the general welfare of its citizens, and considering the amount of drugs and unidentified undocumented immigrants that seep into this country, there should be more done to protect the American people from the threat of drug abuse and the possibility of a criminal activity of immigrants. However, this does not mean to militarize the border and install an impenetrable wall. Although border militarization has been a sought out policy in recent years, it has not done enough for the resources it has consumed. Douglas Massey and Karen Pren, with the Mexican Migration Project at Princeton University, found that the fivefold increase in border patrol agents and twentyfold increase in funding to…

It separates the government into three branches, and declares the powers given to each, also known as the ‘separation of powers’ (Paletz 69). The powers of the state are also listed, and thus establishes the different responsibilities of the national government and the state government. The various Articles within the Constitution structure many different things, like how many terms an official can serve and how a president is to be elected.…

Power, by definition is to hold a position of high authority or the ability to influence the lives of others in substantial ways. Power can take or give freedom, as freedom can take or bestow power. My stance on the governments’ involvement of economics in the United States is very similar to the ideas of former President Thomas Jefferson. It is a given to know and understand that the government is in charge of the American people, but what does it mean when it is said that the people are in charge of the government? I believe that the government should have some say, because is that not why we as Americans elect government officials? Take for instance the huge cigarette problem issued in 1960. During the late 1950’s cigarettes were advertised on television being supported by proclaimed doctors, I love Lucy, and even The Flintstones as a few examples.…
