The United States has had many disasters over the course of its history that have devastated the land and its people. In each instance the United States government and many Non-Profit organizations, were there to bring aid, food, and support to these people in their time of need. The United States however, is not the only country to be hit with disasters and emergencies, and many times the way they receive help is different from the United States. The United States is a big country that can usually support itself after a disaster and can recover quickly depending on the severity of the damages caused by the disaster. What happens though to the smaller countries when hit with a disaster? What type of aid do they receive and where does it come …show more content…
One way countries outside of the United States deal with disasters and emergency situations, is the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The UNDP works to restore government and community capacities to rebuild and recover, so as to prevent a crisis situation (Haddow, Bullock, Coppola, 2014). From this description it seems like the purpose of this program is to enter a country after an emergency situation and try to restore order or balance before the country erupts into chaos. An example of this could be after a major flood, food and clean water are going to be in short supply, and these are things that people need to survive. It seems like the purpose of this program would help a country such as this, and bring them what they need before things got out of hand. This makes sense since after a disaster there is going to be confusion, and panic among the people and if something is not done soon, it can erupt into turmoil. Another purpose of this program seems to be to help the government get back on its feet and help them get back to working levels so that they can fully recover and be were they …show more content…
The main purpose of WHO is to be the central authority on sanitation and health issues throughout the world (Haddow et al, 2014). From this description, it seems like the main purpose of this group is to provide aid and to make sure that everyone around the world has access to sanitation areas and to bring health awareness to certain countries that can often go unnoticed by the world. After a disaster sanitation can be a major issue that people would be facing during this time. Food and water are contaminated, deadly bacteria is definitely a possibility, and medical supplies can be in short supply. This group does a great thing, when they can provide this type of aid and can provide sanitation supplies to countries that desperately need them. Also it is god that they want to bring in health awareness on a global scale. Most people probably take for granted, the access they have to things like medicine or doctors when they get sick. Many countries, however don’t have this type of access and this access becomes even worse after a disaster. This idea of health awareness is great to hear because there could be some form of disease that is affecting a great number of people, which is not getting attention of the world, and is something that needs to be addressed. Also this group does a great thing by addressing these issues because most people often ignore

There are several ways Americans have helped each other during hard times. One of those times were when 9/11 happened. Another time was when Hurricane Katrina occurred. Their effective response showed that they had learned a lesson from previous crisis like Katrina. They had practiced and worked together as emergency agencies for crisis like that. There was coordination of agencies at every level of government (federal-state-local-private-public-nonprofit-civilian) that is why their response rate was a success. To show how organized they were, they quickly turned field stations set up to treat dehydrated runners into triage stations during the crisis (Kettl, 2015). The leader executed orders quickly to respond to the crisis unlike what had happened during the Katrina crisis.…
