I started volunteering at St. Martha's Pantry in sixth grade until my freshman year. I also devoted my volunteering at my local church's food pantry. Everyday after school, I would bag canned food for people who could not afford groceries…
One breath away! One breath away, someone is freezing, all alone. The last shred of warmness in his body will be gone. His heart will turn cold. He is one breath away from complete coldness.…
This year I volunteered at Atlanta food bank. The Atlanta food bank is an organization that provides food and other critical resources for low-income Georgians who suffer from hunger and food insecurity. The mission of the Atlanta community food bank is to fight hunger by engaging, education and empowering the community. Their mission is lived out every day through seven projects that help engage, educate and empower both people in need and those who want help. I have fulfill the agency’s mission by volunteering at the food bank and being an active participant in organizing and sorting food.…
Adversity on the human spirit can be difficult situation arise almost daily in the lives of most individuals. When confronted with adversity, individuals are forced to deal with the circumstances in the best way they know how. People can reach a point where they can no longer deal in the human spiritual way in their lives. It is at this point that individuals have to make a choice, either to allow themselves to be devastated, or to rise above their difficulties, and allow their true spirit to return to them. The poem “Pessimist” by James Lasdun, the speaker reflects on how despite adversity, one can remain optimistic, even though the individual thinks pessimistic there will always be happiness.…
For our civic engagement project for the Redefining Leadership class, my group, Stephanie, Hailee, Christina, and I, decided to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, Connecticut on a Thursday. Before we got there, we did not know what to expect, but afterwards, we truly felt grateful that we helped out a great cause. The Ronald McDonald House is a charity house that keeps families close to their family members that are being treated at a nearby hospital. We spoke with someone who works at the House and she told us that eight families were there on that day. We were able to see some people and did what we could to help out.…
I always feel great about volunteering. One of my favorite memories is when on of the moms used to always thank me for watching her little son Elijah. She was so kind to me, she did not have to be kind. She was going through a lot, and she took her time to be kind and have conversations with me. I have not seen her for a long time, but I remember her appreciation.…
Being in the National Honors Society is one of the highest honors that can be earned by a high school student. It opens up opportunities for scholarships, looks great on college applications, and shows that I’m on the right path for my future. I’ve dreamt about being in NHS for years, knowing its strong reputation and prestige. Now that the moment I’ve been dreaming about is here, for once, I’m actually happy to say there was something my moms were right about.…
I spent my 10 volunteering hours for the Service Learning Project at Growing Grounds. Growing Grounds is a place where people with mental health issues can go to work and learn group skills such as teamwork, communication, etcetera. At Growing Grounds they are trying to get rid of the mental health stigma while giving the workers a better chance in the world. During my time volunteering I did a variety of different jobs, like planting, setting up orders, delivering orders, weeding, watering, and tagging plants. All of this was done working side-by-side with the workers and other volunteers.…
The National Junior Honor Society is a very prestigious program that rewards students for their service in their communities, leadership skills, citizenship, and character. Pennsylvania Virtual Charter School highlights these important qualities and I honored to be selected to apply for the society. I believe my morals, love of service, and leadership skills make me a strong candidate to the National Junior Honor Society. Community service is a rewarding activity that, sadly, not many teens and preteens participate in.…
The summer before my senior year of high school, I volunteered at Centennial Hills Hospital. I was the only teenager who met the criteria for this summer program, and was the only one to complete the program. This summer program involved me working in different departments around the hospital. My jobs included stocking the ER, supplying snacks for new mothers, admitting people for surgery and appointments, cleaning gurneys, visiting each patient, and providing information to visitors at the front desk. All of these jobs were accomplished four hours a day, three days a week.…
At Midd-West High School in order for a student to graduate from high school you must complete a senior project. I chose to do a food drive that would benefit people in my community. My goal for the project was to collect at least 100 pounds of food. I planned on sorting the items and donating them to Five Barley Loaves.…
During my two volunteer experiences I participated in for the service learning portion of this class, I had the opportunity to witness many different walks of life. I was taken in on a side of poverty I’ve never before seen, and on a very intimate level. My first volunteer experience this semester was at a local food pantry, the Pratt-Quigley center. The neighborhood around the food pantry seemed very run down and poor. Shortly after arriving there, we were directed to the room where all the food was stored after it had been donated, waiting to be sorted.…
Community service is something I have grown up doing. Throughout my life I have volunteered a lot of my time to organizations within my community. I have served at the community soup kitchen, helped young Monett Water Thrasher Swim Team members improve their strokes, and volunteered as a table worker at Monett High School and Monett Youth Club wrestling tournaments. I have always been very involved in helping individuals within my community. I feel as though performing community service as a child and young adult has shaped me into the person I am today.…
