Basic Beginner
Basic beginners are learners who have had extremely limited or no exposure to English language at all. Usually, these are students who have had very little education (generally).They are often more challenging to teach, since these students cannot be expected to understand even the most basic instructions or questions (e.g. ‘stand up’ or ‘what is your name?’). Teachers cannot expect them to recognize alphabets – let alone read, write or know about pronunciation and sight words. That is why, when working …show more content…
These students are able to have (simple) short conversations on basic topics, but they struggle to carry on with the conversation – also their sentences are usually incomplete. Their vocabulary is limited to commonly-used words. Students are able to comprehend some simple instructions given to them (e.g. ‘raise your left arm’) and are able to answer some easy questions. Their listening skills tend to develop faster than their speaking skills. Intermediate students’ writing skills are limited; they can write basic sentences and a few words. They have a sound knowledge of vocabulary, thus requiring less assistance from the teacher. At this stage students are eloquent enough to appropriately express their point of views – and their grammar and vocabulary skills enable them to communicate their ideas in details. They are able to put their thoughts in words as well as rephrase anything they read or hear. Advanced students are also skilful listeners; they are able to understand longer speeches. Students can plan and direct new and unfamiliar subjects. Nevertheless understanding may be uneven; although students are able to comprehend most of what they hear or read, there are still a few topics that can be a bit difficult/ confusing for them. Despite making a few grammar and spelling mistakes, students are able to write fluently. And they can write down their answers and/or ideas in an orderly
